University of San Francisco Men's Tennis earn #60 National Ranking

Dons ranked #60 in the nation following strong outing in Utah

(San Francisco,CA) - The University of San Francisco's Men's Tennis team earned a national rank of No. 60 in the ITA Collegiate rankings released Tuesday. USF is currently 6-2, 2-0 against West Coast Conference foes.

"It is nice to be nationally recognized in the national rankings," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "We know, though, that we will still have a lot of work ahead of us. We still are striving towards the goal of, as team, reaching the NCAA's. We will continue to work on our goals throughout the season."

San Francisco will return to action Thursday at 11:30 a.m. as it hosts Xavier at the California Tennis Club.

USF Takes Down Weber State

(Logan, Utah) - San Francisco men's tennis wrapped up their three-match road trip through Utah with a 4-3 victory over Weber State Sunday. Thai Tu continued his current win streak, earning his sixth consecutive singles match.

With the win, the Dons improved to 6-4 for the spring season.

"Weber State came out firing against us today and we had our backs against the wall," commented head coach Peter Bartlett. "Our guys fought through the conditions and won some huge tiebreakers at key positions to keep us alive".

Weber State took an early lead with the doubles point. The lone USF doubles victory came courtesy of Mark DeCastro and Einar Hart at No. 3, as they defeated Paterson and Rode, 9-7.

The Dons came storming back in singles action. Weber State nearly grabbed the victory taking an early 3-0 lead, but USF fought its way back. Ola Bakke started the campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Cole Paterson. Tu then secured his sixth straight victory at No. 1 with a 5-7, 7-6 (9), 6-2 win against Unger. At No. 2, Hart earned a 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 win over Hipp. William Schumacher secured the victory for San Francisco at No. 5 thanks to a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 win over Hmtz.

USF won a close battle today against Weber State 4-3 by winning 4 singles matches. Weber State took the lead by winning the doubles point and went up on almost all the singles matches before the Dons fought their way back and won at 4, 1, 3 and 5.

USF will return to the courts Thursday at 1 as they host Xavier at the Cal Club.

USF Takes Down No. 70 Utah

(Salt Lake City,UT) The University of San Francisco men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over host No. 40 Utah Saturday in Salt Lake City. Ola Bakke clinched the win for the Dons with his first clinching victory of his collegiate career.

With the win, USF improves to 5-4 on the season and earned their second victory this season over a nationally-ranked foe.

"We knew it was going to be a close 4-3 type match," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "Our guys have been working hard lately to get a legitimate win over a very good program, like Utah. We battled the conditions and competed really well today."

San Francisco got out to a fast start, earning the doubles point. The Dons took the No. 2 spot with an 8-6 victory by William Schumacher and Rainer Nachbauer. At No. 3, Einar Hart and Mark DeCastro led the Dons to the point with an 8-4 victory over Allin and Suriane.

In singles action, Thai Tu earned his fifth straight victory with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Phillip Eilers. Schumacher garnered a point for USF at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Stephen Jacobs before Bakke captured the match for San Francisco with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win against Alex Golding at No. 3.

USF will take the court again Sunday when they face Weber State at 10 a.m.

USF Men's Tennis Falters In Provo

(Provo, Utah) - The USF men's tennis team opened a weekend swing through the state of Utah Friday afternoon with a 6-1 loss to No. 45 BYU in Provo. Thai Tu garnered the Dons' lone victory in singles action.

With the loss, San Francisco falls to 4-4 on the season.

BYU jumped out to an early lead in doubles play, taking all three doubles sets. The Dons came close at No. 2 and 3, but were unable to capture the point, falling 8-6 at both positions.

In singles action, Tu garnered USF's lone point of the afternoon thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 98 Shubert. San Francisco fell in straight sets at the remaining five singles spots.

The Dons resume play Saturday as they face No. 70 Utah in Salt Lake City.

Coached by former ATP Tour player Brad Pearce the Cougars are currently 9-1 coming off a loss to PAC-10 team University of Arizona and most recently a win defeating of South Alabama. BYU'S number one player is #98 Thomas Shubert from Honolulu, Hawaii. The Dons last played BYU during the 2006-2007 season. Scouting UTAH
The UTAH Utes are currently 4-3 coached by F.D. Robbins in his 23rd year. The Utes are currently #67 in the nation. The Dons and Utes last faced on the roof of the SFTC February of 2008 as the Dons won in a hard fought battle 4-3 coming down to Senior Falko Huettenberger's thrilling 3rd set victory.

Scouting Weber State
The Weber State Wildcats are part of the Big Sky Conference and are coached by Jared Burnham in his fifth season. The Wildcats finished 2008-2009 with a 14-12 record and currently are coming off a 5-2 loss to University of Utah. The Wildcats are currently 3-5 during the 2009-2010 season.

Dons defeat UC Davis Aggies

(Davis, Calif.) - The University of San Francisco won four singles matches, offsetting the doubles point captured by UC Davis, as the Dons rallied for a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, Calif.

The victory improves to Dons to 4-3, while the Aggies drop to 4-5

UC Davis secured the doubles point, winning two of three doubles matches. The lone USF victory came at No. 3, as Einar Hart and Mark DeCastro earned a 9-8 (7-4) victory over Tyler Lee and Nic Amaroli.

San Francisco rallied in singles action to earn the victory. USF started off with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 by DeCastro, before Thai Tu gave the Dons the advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nick Lopez. San Francisco went up 3-1 thanks to a No. 3, 6-0 6-4, victory by Ola Bakke, but UCD knotted the score 3-3, leaving the final match to be the determining contest. At No. 6, Jacob Hartwig defeated Connor Coates in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-4, to put the Dons on top and the victory.

USF will return to the court Friday at 1 p.m. when they face BYU in Provo.

The Dons last faced the Aggies on February 18,2009 winning 5-2 at the California Tennis Club. Seniors Mitch Del Rosario and Tommy Tu came out on top in singles.

The Aggies will face the LMU Lions Friday December 19th. The Aggies are led by Toki Sherbakov and Connor Coates. The Aggies are currently 4-3 and currently are coming off of a 5-2 loss to University of Portland. The Aggies play in the Big West Conference.

The Dons were able to get on the right track sweeping the doubles and winning at 1,2,and 5. Freshman Mark DeCastro was able to clinch the match winning in three sets. The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team 2-3 (WCC 1-0) will play St. Mary's in Moraga at the Timothy Korth Complex on Wednesday at 3p.m. The Dons coming off a 4-2 win over #75 University of Pacific on Friday February 12th at the California Tennis Club will look to even their record. Following Wednesdays match the Dons will face UC Davis in Davis, California on Saturday February 20th at 1p.m.

Scouting the Opponent
The Dons last faced the Gaels in the West Coast Conference Tournament in San Diego,CA wining a 1st round decision 4-3. Sophomore Jacob Hartwig was able to come through to push the Dons into the Semifinals against the Waves. The Gaels are led by Junior Lucas Tirelli and Senior Andreas Zannoni. The Gaels are coming off of a 5-2 win over Eastern Washington in Eugene, Oregon.

(San Francisco,CA) - The University of San Francisco men's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over visiting Pacific Friday at the Cal Club. The match contained only singles action due to threatening weather in The City.

With the victory, the Dons improved to 2-3 for the season.

"Our guys new that Pacific was going to be a tough match," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "They knew that they were going to have to work hard. With the rain and abnormal conditions, our guys really did a good job working hard from the get go.We acted as a team and used the California Tennis Club's facility as our own today with lots of great support and energy. In the end, we played with discipline and confidence." Next match is a conference showdown against Saint Mary's on Wednesday the 17th at Saint Mary's 3pm.

USF took victories at the No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 spots to garner the match victory. Thai Tu posted a straight-set 6-4, 6-0 victory over, nationally-ranked, No. 108 Artem Gramma, 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Mark DeCastro earned at No. 4 victory for San Francisco with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Vigard Veskimaji, while Ola Bakke earned at 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 against Karl Paaro. Jacob Hartwig rounded out USF victories at No. 6, thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 win against Chase Oliphant.

San Francisco will return to the courts Wednesday as it faces Saint Mary's in Moraga at 3 p.m.

Dons Drop Decision to #26 Fresno State

The University of San Francisco men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to nationally-ranked No. 26 Fresno State Sunday evening in Fresno, Calif.

With the loss, the Dons, who are ranked regionally, fell to 1-3 on the season.

Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen battled hard in the contest but were unable to secure a point for USF. Tu earned match points and Cohen won his first set, before the match was decided.

"Fresno State was another tough opponent," commented head coach Peter Bartlett. "The guys needed to take advantage of opportunities in order to turn that match around. Our guys are a little young and learned a lot from their experience today. We are taking confidence from this match and looking forward to another home match this Friday."

San Francisco will return to the courts Friday when it hosts Pacific at the Cal Club. First serve is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will face #26 ranked Fresno State Sunday night at 5p.m. down in Fresno,CA. The Dons 1-2 (1-0 WCC) look to battle the Bulldogs at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

Scouting the Opponent

The Fresno State Bulldogs recently lost 4-3 on February 3 to the #33 ranked California Golden Bears. The match came down to the wire with Cal's Jonathan Dahan winning the last match. Fresno will also compete in the ITA National Indoor Tournament in Charlotesville, VA after playing the Dons. The Bulldogs boast the No. 83 player in the country, David Ayoun, and two Top 40 doubles teams, No. 20 Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby and No. 36 Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier.

What to Look For

The Dons will be playing the Bulldogs in a doubleheader after Fresno State battles Santa Clara in the morning. The Dons will be at full strength as Senior Rainer Nachbauer is back in action after missing the first two matches of the season. The Dons coming off a close 5-2 loss to #41 University of Hawaii look to carry the momentum on Sunday.

Dons Drop Decision to No. 41 Hawai'i

Freshman William Schumacher earned a singles victory Wednesday as the USF men's team dropped at 5-2 decision to No. 41 Hawai'i at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. The victory at the No. 6 position marked the second of the spring for Schumacher.

"Our guys proved today that they are ready to take down a nationally ranked team," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "We had many opportunities and the University of Hawaii team did a good job of hanging in there a little longer than us. We had the momentum early with the doubles point win from #2, #1 and let some opportunities go that hurt us in the end. Our guys showed that they are a top team today that is due for a big win."

USF (1-2) jumped out to an early lead in doubles play, taking the top two points. Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen defeated the Warriors' Dennis Lajola and Jeremy Tweedt, 9-7, at the top spot. The Dons' earned the doubles point thanks to the efforts of Mark DeCastro and Einar Hart, who downed Phillipp Eberhard and Andreas Weber 8-4 at No. 2. Schumacher and Rainer Nachbauer were unable to secure the sweep for USF, falling at No. 3 to Daniel Llarenas and Leo Rosenberg 8-3.

Schumacher was the lone Don to earn a singles point, thanks to a sweep of Llaernas at the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-1. Cohen and DeCastro each forced three sets in their respective matches. Cohen fell behind early to Tweedt but rebounded in the second set to force a third. The senior was unable to carry the momentum, though, falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. DeCastro earned the victory in the opening set but stumbled to fall to Eberhard 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

San Francisco will return to the courts Sunday when it travels to Fresno State. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Thai Tu, Ola Bakke and Mark DeCastro each earned singles victories Sunday as the USF men's tennis team dropped at 4-3 decision at UC Irvine.

With the loss, the Dons evened their record for the spring at 1-1.

Irvine jumped out with an early lead, earning the doubles point. The Dons won just one spot, as Tu and Asaf Cohen earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 over Zac Tsai and Khunpol Issara.

The Dons earned three points in singles play, thanks to victories at No. 1, 3 and 5. Tu earned his second victory of the season with a three-set win (2-6, 7-5, 6-1) over Fabian Matthews. Bakke earned his second career victory for USF at No. 2, defeating Shimpei Suzuki. DeCastro won his second consecutive singles match at No. 5, downing Steven Henderson 6-1, 6-3.

The University of San Francisco Men's tennis opened the 2010 spring season Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. William Schumacher and Mark DeCastro earned their first career victories in the Dons' season opener.

USF jumped out to an early lead, earning the doubles point. Playing No. 2, Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen posted an 8-3 victory over Lopez and Sauer. At No. 1, De Castro and Jacob Hartwig downed Maggi and Malet 8-6. LMU earned the victory at No. 3 as Zaraca and Bazula earned an 8-6 win against USF's Schumacher and Ola Bakke.

In singles action, Tu, Bakke, Hart, DeCastro and Schumacher earned victories to give USF the win. Tu downed Sauer at No. 1 6-1, 6-2, while Bakke earned at victory at No. 3 over Malet, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. USF to battle against WCC Opponent Loyola Marymount University

The University of San Francisco Men's Team rained out of it's first three matches will play Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine this weekend down in LA. The Dons are picked to finish 3rd in the West Coast Conference in 2010 and look to finish higher than their 3rd place finish of 2009. The Loyola Marymount Lions are projected to finish 5th on the Men's side. Match time will be at 12p.m. on Saturday January 30th at the LMU Tennis Center.

Scouting the opponent
The Loyola Marymount Men bring three seniors this year and two talented sophomores. The Lions are led by Ivan Lopez who is ranked #87 in the ITA rankings in singles and is ranked #60 with Otto Sauer in doubles. The Lions will look to seniors Borja Malet, Renzo Maggi, and Nick Von Der Ahe.

Last Meeting
The Dons last faced the Lions on April 4th, 2009 with the Dons Winning 4-3 thanks to Rainer Nachbauer's cliniching singles victory at the #3 singles position. The Dons would win the doubles point and Seniors Tommy Tu and Mitch Del Rosario both posted singles wins.

USF Sophomore Thai Tu Receives Regional Ranking

USF Sophomore Thai Tu (Alameda,CA) received a regional ranking of #20 for the start of the spring season. The vote was based on the the Northwest College Coaches and was administered by the ITA Committee. Tu and Senior Asaf Cohen (Tel Aviv,Israel)also received the #10 ranking in doubles for the Northwest section.

Dons picked to Finish 3rd in WCC Conference

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team was picked to finish 3rd in the West Coast Conference preseason poll, as voted by the Head Coaches in the Conference.The Dons have finished 3rd in 2003, 2006,and in 2009. Pepperdine University was picked as the favorite to win this year's West Coast Conference title in the 2010 preseason poll. 2009 WCC Champion Pepperdine garnered seven first place votes for a total of 49 points in the men's poll. The Waves are currently ranked No. 17 in the ITA national rankings. San Diego, last year's second place finisher in the WCC, received the remaining first place vote and a total of 41 points to take second place in the preseason poll. San Francisco was picked third with 33 points, while Santa Clara came in fourth with one less point than the Dons. Loyola Marymount received 24 points, edging out Portland, who received 21 points from the coaches. Saint Mary's came in seventh with 16 points, and Gonzaga rounded out the poll with eight.

On the men's preseason all-conference team, San Diego's Dean Jackson and Pepperdine's Bassam Beidas topped the list, both of whom competed in last year's NCAA Tournament. Jackson became an All-American in singles after his run to the Round of 16, while Beidas Beidas appeared on the All-American list in doubles. Pepperdine's Alex Llompart, last year's WCC Freshman of the Year, also gained a spot on the preseason team along with All-WCC First Team member Filip Zivkovic from Portland. Loyola Marymount's No. 1 singles player Ivan Lopez was also a preseason all-conference selection joined by San Diego's Nikola Bubnic, who played an integral part in San Diego's second place finish at last year's WCC Championships.

Dons set to face Toreros

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will face the USD Toreros Tuesday January 19th at the USD West Tennis Courts at 1:30p.m. The Dons unable to complete their first match against the Pepperdine Waves due to inclimate weather will look to battle the Toreros. With the forecast having a good chance of rain, singles play will most likely happen first. Go Dons!!!

Last Meeting
The Dons last faced the Toreros in the 3rd/4th place match in the West Coast Conference Tournament during the 2008 season losing a heart breaking match 4-3. The match came down to the #6 singles match with San Diego winning the 3rd set tiebreaker.

The University of San Francisco Men's tennis team was battling against #17 Pepperdine University today at the Malibu Racquet Club when play was halted due to rain. The dual match will try and continue Monday if weather stays clear. The Dons will next battle the University of San Diego tuesday down in San Diego. Both coaches from USF and Pepperdine hope to reschedule the match, which was there Spring dual season opener for both Universities. Play will resume from the point it was stopped.

Dons get set to ride the Pepperdine Waves in Malibu

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will face the Pepperdine Waves Saturday January 17th at 12p.m. at the Malibu Racquet Club to kickoff the 09-10 season. The Dons finished the 2008-2009 season last year 9-12 with a 3rd place finish in the West Coast Conference losing to #18 Pepperdine University 4-0 in the Conference Semifinals and defeating University of Portland 4-1 to finish 3rd. The Pepperdine Waves finished the 2008-2009 season 20-10 Winning the WCC Title and defeating Cal 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA's before losing to Stanford 4-0 in the 2nd rd of the NCAA Tournament in Palo Alto.

New Faces for the Dons
The Dons Bring in 5 new players to the squad this year led by sophomore Cal Transfer Thai Tu(Alameda,CA). Tu is the brother of former USF #1 Tommy Tu c/o'09. The Dons also add University of Arizona transfer Ola Bakke (Oslo,Norway)and three freshman Mark DeCastro (Union City,CA) Will Schumacher (New Orleans,LA) and Spring 2010 addition Richard Bucalem (San Paulo, Brazil). The Dons look improve on their 2009 Season.

The Pepperdine Waves will be led by #39 Bassam Beidas who claimed the 2009 Southern Intercollegiate tournament defeating USC's Daniel Nguyen. Returning players for the Waves will be Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) , Alejandro Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico), and Stuart Kepler (Dallas, TX).

Dons advance five to the semifinals, one to the finals

(Moraga, Calif.) - USF men's tennis competed at the 2009 Gael Men's Invitational over the weekend in Moraga, advancing four to the singles semifinals, one to the finals and a doubles team to the semifinals of their respective brackets.

In the Red Singles flight, the Dons' Thai Tu advanced to the semifinals. In the opening round, Tu defeated Brian McPhee from Cal Poly 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 before downing Cal's Bijan Hejazi 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals Tu faced off against Nevada's Quassin Derbel, the top seed in the bracket, and earned a straight-set 7-5, 6-4 victory. In the same bracket, Jacob Hartwig won his opening round contest against Chris Aria of UC Davis, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) before falling in the round of 16 to Bo Katsarov, the second seed, from California.

Einar Hart advanced to the Finals of the Red Consolation bracket after defeating teammate William Schumacher in the semifinals,. Hart defeated Cal Poly's Sebastian Bell in the first round 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5) before earned a win over Michael Carreno of Saint Mary's 6-3, 5-1 Ret. Inj to advance to the semis. Schumacher earned a bye in the first round, before defeating Grant Fleming of Santa Clara 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(10-8) in the quarterfinals.

In the White Singles flight, San Francisco's Mark DeCastro advanced to the semifinals, before falling to Sherif Hamdy, the third seed, 6-4, 6-4. In the opening round, DeCastro defeated Nick Amaroli of UC Davis 6-4, 6-4, before downing the No. 2 seed, Alex Daruty of Nevada 6-1, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, DeCastro earned a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) win over Cal Poly's Blake Wardman.

In doubles action, the USF duo of Rainer Nachbauer and William Schumacher advanced to the semifinals. In the round of 16, the Dons defeated Hejazi and Tommie Murphy of Cal 8-3, before downing Nevada's Kristian Kuharsky and Quassim Derbi, the third seeded duo 8-5. The Dons fell in the semifinals to Chris Konigsfdt and Pedro Zerbini, the No. 2 seed, 8-4.

Day 1 of the Battle of the Bay Classic

Thursday marked the qualifying rounds of the 2009 Battle of the Bay Classic, hosted by the USF men’s tennis team, at the Cal Club in San Francisco. The four-day event features the top singles players and doubles teams from five Division I schools in the Bay Area - USF, California, Stanford, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara. Admission to the event free for the general public.

Six matches were played Thursday as part of qualifying for the main draws, which will begin Friday.

The day opened with USF’s Einar Hart posting a straight set 6-3, 6-3 victory over Saint Mary’s Sherif Hamdy in singles action. Also representing the Dons for the day, William Schumacher suffered a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 loss at the hands of Grant Fleming from Santa Clara. In addition, Tommie Murphy from Cal earned a 3-6, 7-5, 14-12 win over Andreas Zannoni of SMC and Tom Pham from Santa Clara downed Sam Ecker from Stanford 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles action, Murphy teams with Nick Andrews from Cal to defeat the Gaels’ Hamdy and Steven Dawson-Roberts 8-3. In the final action of the afternoon, Pham and Buckley from Santa Clara defeated Stanford’s Ted Kelly and Ecker, 8-1.

Friday, the first serves of the day will start at 10 a.m. for singles play. Doubles are slated to begin at 2:30. Following doubles action, there will be an ATP exhibition featuring Paul Goldstein and Sam Warburg, both of whom are alumni of the Stanford men's tennis program.

The quarterfinals and semifinals for the singles bracket will take place Saturday at 10:30 and 12:30, respectively. Following singles action, the doubles semifinals will be played at 3 p.m.

Sunday will be Kids Day at the courts, with the finals of both the singles and doubles brackets taking center stage. Action is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. The Dons have worked in conjunction with Harper for Kids, a local non-profit organization, to produce Kids Day at the Cal Club.

(San Francisco,CA) - USF men's tennis will host the inaugural Battle of the Bay Classic this weekend at the Cal Club in San Francisco. The four-day event will feature the top singles players and doubles teams from five Division I schools in
the Bay Area - USF, California, Stanford, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara. Admission to the event is free for the general public.

The Battle of the Bay will not only feature the top collegiate tennis players from the region, it was also highlight former ATP professionals. The invitational tournament will be the first of its kind, featuring high-level competitive tennis with local and national repercussions at stake. The Battle of the Bay is an Intercollegiate Tennis Association sanctioned event that will count for NCAA Division I singles and doubles rankings.

Action will get underway Thursday with the qualifying rounds. Singles play will begin at 10 a.m., with doubles qualifying commencing immediately following.

University of San Francisco to compete at ITA Regionals

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will compete at the ITA Regional Championships in Berkeley,CA Friday, Oct. 23, through Tuesday, Oct. 27th at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. The five-day tournament will produce a singles and doubles champion which will each earn berths to the 2009 ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships from Nov. 5-8, in New Haven, Conn.

Universities that will be competing with the USF Dons will be Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's College, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington.

Hosted by the University of California, the 2009 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship will determine a singles and doubles champion from the ITA Northwest Region. The regional tournament will consist of a 128-player singles draw and a 64-team doubles draw. A 64-player singles consolation draw will be held only for those players who lose their first round match. There will also be one round of doubles consolation play.

Singles and doubles champions from each of the main draws will earn automatic bids into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held in New Haven, Conn. Nov. 5-8. The ITA National Indoor Championships are the second of college tennis's three major championships and the most difficult to gain entry into due to a small field of 32 singles entrants and 16 doubles entrants.

Thai Tu falls in close Match in Tiburon Qualifying

USF Sophomore Thai Tu came up on the short end Saturday afternoon losing an incredibly close match to Australia's ATP #250 Nick Lindahl 4-6,7-5,7-6(6) after holding match points. Tu who is a transfer from Cal Berkeley looks to play at the #1 spot for the Dons this year as did his brother Tommy Tu c/o'09 who graduated this past spring. Tu and Lindahl traded baseline shots and rallys from corner to corner. Tu was serving for the match in the second set at 5-4, third set at 5-4 holding match point, and having match point in the 3rd set tiebreaker at 6-5. Lindahl an experienced seasoned ATP Pro at 21 who has played mostly Challengers during his career participated in this year's Australian Open and more recently won the Seascape Challenger this past July in Aptos,CA.

University of San Francisco Sophomore Thai Tu Receives WC into RBS Pro Challenger Qualifying

Sophomore Thai Tu has been granted a Wildcard into the qualifying of the RBC Challenger in Tiburon,California. Qualifying play will begin the weekend of October 10-11th at the Tiburon Peninsula Club with the Main Draw starting the week of October 12-18th. The Tiburon Peninsula Club is very proud to host the $50,000 Royal Bank of Scotland USTA Pro Circuit Challenger. As you may recall, TPC has hosted two of these events, in 2003 and 2004. Both were resounding successes — sponsors and participants considered these tournaments the best USTA Challengers on the schedule. The qualifying tournament begins Saturday, October 10th, with the main draw starting on Monday, October 12 and culminating with the finals on Sunday, October 18th.

USTA Men's Circuit
There are two types of men's events on the USTA Pro Circuit: Futures and Challengers. Each event has 32 players in the main singles draw and 16 teams competing in doubles.

Futures are professional tournaments offering $10,000 to $15,000 in prize money and are typically the proving ground for top-ranked juniors, college players and pros at the beginning of their careers. Players competing in Futures generally have an ATP Entry System ranking ranging from No. 150 to No. 900. The singles qualifying draw size is 64 or 128 players for the $10,000 events, and 64 players for the $15,000 events. Players must reach the round of 16 to earn a ranking point.

Challengers offer $25,000 to $50,000 in prize money. These tournaments serve as a bridge between the Futures and the ATP tour and enable players to earn more points per round than they do in Futures events. In fact, players can achieve a Top 100 ranking by playing solely in Challengers. The qualifying draw size is 32 players.

USF advances six singles to at least the quarterfinals

Fresno, Calif.) - The USF men's tennis team opened the 2009 fall season this weekend at the Bulldog Classic in Fresno. The event was successful for the Dons, who had six singles and a doubles team advance to at least the quarterfinals of each bracket.

In the singles Flight A bracket, newcomer Thai Tu earned a bye in the round of 32, before posting three-set victories in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals. In the round of 16, the sophomore posted a 4-6, 7-5 6-1 defeat of Riki McLachlan from Cal before downing Frenso State's Botillier 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Tu's run fell short though, as he lost to eventual champion Rikus DeVilliers of FSU, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

In the Flight B bracket, three Dons advanced to the round of 16, but just one USF player advanced further. Rainer Nachbauer, Jacob Hartwig and Einar Hart each advanced to the round of 16, with just Nachbauer advancing on. Hartwin posted a three-set 6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (3) victory over Sho Hugichi of Oregon in the opening round before dropping a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 match to Matheiu Forget of UC Santa Barbara in the round of 16. Hart posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gabe Kanzelmeyer of Nevada, before falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Chris Aria of UC Davis in the second round. Nachbauer earned a spot in the round of 16 by virtue of a bye, before advancing to the quarterfinals with a defeat due to injury in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Nachbauer feel 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 to Taylor Leiby of Fresno State.

Ola Bakke fell in the opening round of the Flight B, but advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket, thanks to a straight set 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kristian Kuharszky of Nevada.
In Flight C, Will Schumaker highlighted the Dons' efforts advancing to the Finals. The freshman posted a 6-3, 6-2 opening round victory over Jack Horowitz of UC Davis, before defeating Robert Zacks of Cal Poly 6-3, 7-6. In the Semifinals, Schumaker defeated Somach of Oregon 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 before falling in the championship to Max Glenn 6-1, 4-6, 4-3, ret.

In doubles action, the Dons' Mark DeCastro and Schumaker advanced to the semifinals of the B Flight. Also in action in the flight were the San Francisco doubles teams of Kotlyar/Peder Steen and Hart/Nachbauer.

USF will take to the courts again this weekend as they travel to Tiburon for the TPC Challenge.

(San Francisco,CA)-The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team this past April in San Diego,CA finished in Third Place for the 3rd time in 9 years in the West Coast Conference. The Dons finished 3rd in 2003, 2006, and 2009 and narrowly missed a 3rd place finish in 2008 losing a heartbreaking match in the #6 singles match to USD. The Dons look to build upon their success from the 2009 season and carry the momentum. With three Seniors graduating, the Dons look to reload and will be bringing in 4 new student-athletes in the Fall of 09. The Dons schedule for 2009-2010will be unveiled before the end of the summer.

Tommy Tu Named ITA West Region Senior Of The Year

(San Francisco, Calif.) - Tommy Tu, of the USF men's tennis team, has been named the West Region Farnsworth/ITA Senior Player of the Year, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Tu earns the award on the heels of his stellar final spring with the Dons. During the 2009 campaign, the native of Binh Duong, Vietnam earned All-West Coast Conference first team accolades for the first time in his career and his third overall All-Conference honor. As a senior, Tu posted a 13-8 record playing No. 1 singles for the Green and Gold. Thanks to his outstanding efforts, Tu also became the second Don to be ranked in the national singles ranking. He earned a season-high ranking of 95th and finished the regular season ranked 103rd.

Tu also posted a strong spring in doubles play, teaming with Asaf Cohen to earn All-WCC second team doubles accolades. During the 2009 dual season, the duo reached a season-high national rank of 87th, posting an 8-5 record at the top spot.

With the selection, Tu's name will be automatically nominated for the National Senior Player of the Year.

(San Bruno, Calif.) - Tommy Tu, of the USF men's tennis team, was named to the singles first team All-West Coast Conference team Thursday, as announced by the conference office. Also earning honors was the Dons' double duo of Tu and Asaf Cohen, who were awarded second team All-WCC doubles accolades.

The first team selection marks the first time the native of Binh Duong, Vietnam has been awarded first team accolades, but the third time in his career he has been named All-Conference. Tu was a second team selection in both 2008 and 2007. This spring, the senior posted a 13-8 record playing No. 1 singles for the Green and Gold. Thanks to his outstanding efforts, Tu also became the second Don to be ranked in the national singles ranking. He earned a season-high ranking of 95th and finished the season ranked 103rd.

The doubles duo of Tu and Cohen marks the second time each Don has earned conference recognition for their teamed efforts. Last season, Tu was a second team doubles All-WCC selection with current teammate Rainer Nachbauer, while Cohen also earned second team honors with former Don Falko Huttenberger. This spring, Tu and Cohen reached a season high national rank of 87th, as they posted an 8-5 record at No. 1.

The two selections wraps-up a season for the Dons in which they opened the season ranked for the first time, and tied a program-best finish, placing third at the conference championships. At the WCC Championships, USF used an outstanding comeback against Saint Mary's in the opening round, winning 4-3, to earn a spot in the semifinals against top-seeded Pepperdine. After fighting hard, but dropping a 4-0 decision to the Waves, San Francisco closed out the season against the same team it opened the season against - Portland. Looking to seek revenge for a loss in the opening match of the spring, the Dons relied on a team effort to earn third place overall. Following a memorable doubles set from Tu and Mitch Del Rosario, Einar Hart, Tu and Jacob Hartwig lifted the Dons to a victory thanks to their strong showings in singles play.
"Our third place finish is huge for our program," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "There is a large difference between the Pepperdine, San Diego and USF programs, along the lines of budget, funding and staffing, that this is a large achievement for us. All in all, our team was the definition of team with high engery, support and belief in themselves and their fellow Dons."

San Francisco finished the spring season with a 9-12 record, including going a notable 6-3 against WCC foes.

(San Diego, Calif.) - USF men's tennis secured a third place West Coast Conference finish Sunday with a 4-2 victory over Portland at the WCC Championships in San Diego. The victory marked the sixth time in program history the Dons finished third in the league.The Dons have finished 3rd most recently in 2003,2006,and 2009.

The Dons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after doubles, taking the No. 2 and 3 spots. Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching posted an 8-2 win over Kurdadze and Kincaid at No. 2 to put USF up early. Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer then secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Hernandez and Wales at No. 3.

In singles action, Portland threatened, taking the first point, but the Dons held strong to capture third place in the league. Out of the gates, the Pilots captured at win at No. 6, before San Francisco won at No. 4, 1, and 5 for the win. Tied 1-1, Hart grabbed a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Hernandez to give USF a 2-1 edge. Tommy Tu captured a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1, bumping the Dons to 3-1, before Portland grabbed the No. 2 point, bringing the score to 3-2. Men's Tennis to compete for third place Sunday

(San Diego,CA) - San Francisco's Men's Tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to top-seeded Pepperdine Saturday during the semifinals of the West Coast Conference tennis championships in San Diego. The fourth-seeded Dons will now face either No. 2 San Diego or No. 3 Portland in the 3rd/4th place match Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Waves jumped out early, taking two doubles matches to earn the point. Tommy Tu and Asaf Cohen fell at No. 1, 8-6, to Altmann and Beidas, while Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching fell 8-2 at No. 2 to Clarke and Kamel. The third doubles match wasn't played to the end.

Pepperdine secured the victory with wins at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. At the top spot, Tu fell 6-2, 6-0 at the hands of Altmann before Cohen fell 6-1, 6-4 to Beidas at No. 2. The Waves captured a spot in the championship match with a 6-4, 6-2, Llompart over Rainer Nachbauer victory at No. 3. The fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches did not finish because the outcome would not have swayed the final outcome of the match.

The Dons will wrap-up the 2009 dual match season Sunday as they fight for third place in the final day of the league championship.

(San Diego,Calif.) - San Francisco men's tennis posted a hard fought victory Friday in the opening day of the 2009 West Coast Conference Championship in San Diego. In the first round victory, the fourth seeded Dons up-ended fifth seeded Saint Mary's 4-3.

USF fell behind early, dropping the doubles point to open the morning. The Gaels earned victories and No. 2 and No. 1 to secure the early 1-0 edge. The Dons avoided the sweep at No. 3, as Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer fought off Leon and Ellison of SMC 9-8 (7-6).

The Dons opened singles play, tying the match 1-1 thanks to a 6-4, 6-0 straight set victory by Asaf Cohen at No. 2. Hart then downed Leon 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 to give the Green and Gold a one point lead. Saint Mary's knotted the score 2-2, as Olivan defeated Nachbauer 7-5. 6-4 at No. 3. The Gaels then took the lead, again, as Tommy Tu fell at No.1 to Tirelli 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Down 3-2, Mitch Del Rosario rallied to post a come-from-behind 0-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory over El Bouzkduri to, once again, knot the score. In the fifth, and deciding spot, Jacob Hartwig put the Dons over the top, after coming back to post a 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 6-1 win.

With the victory, San Francisco advances to the WCC semifinals Saturday. The Dons will face top-seeded Pepperdine at 11:30 a.m.

USF Tennis Set For WCC Championships

San Bruno,CA - Both the San Francisco Men's and Women's tennis teams will open the 2009 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships Friday as No. 4 seeds, as announced by the conference office Thursday. The men will open play Friday in San Diego at 8 a.m. against fifth-seeded Saint Mary's, while the women will face No. 5 Loyola Marymount at 11:30 a.m.

Pepperdine secured the No. 1 seed in both the men's and women's tournaments. On the men's side, San Diego is the No. 2 seed, followed by Portland and the Dons. Saint Mary's is the No. 5 seed, Gonzaga is the No. 6 seed, and Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara are the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds, respectively.

In the women's field, the Waves are followed by No. 2 seeded San Diego, No. 3 seed Saint Mary's, and No. 4 seeded San Francisco. Loyola Marymount is the No. 5 seed, followed by Santa Clara, Portland, and Gonzaga.

The Pepperdine men's team has historically dominated the WCC Championships, winning 18 straight titles and 39 overall. San Diego is the only other current WCC school to have won the men's title, earning back-to-back crowns in 1988 and 1989. Last season the USF men placed fourth. The highest finish in history for the Green and Gold men is a second place finish, a feat they have accomplished twice, most recently in 1981.

On the women's side, the Wave women have been nearly as dominant as the men's team, claiming 20 of the last 21 WCC Championships, including the last six titles. Loyola Marymount is the only other current WCC member to have won a women's championship, claiming their first-ever title in 2002. Last season the women placed fourth, matching a program-high. The Dons also finished second in 1991.

Stanford, Calif. - In the final tune-up heading into this weekend's West Coast Conference Championships, the USF men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 8 Stanford Wednesday in Stanford, Calif. With the loss, the Dons fall to 7-11.

The Cardinal jumped out to an early lead in doubles action, sweeping all three points. The Dons duos' of Tommy Tu and Asaf Cohen, the 87th ranked doubles team in the nation, and Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching each feel 8-1, at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. At No. 3, Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer fell 8-3 to Stanford's Clayton and Burch.

Stanford continued its winning ways in singles action, winning all seven sets in straight sets. At No. 5, Del Rosario fell to No. 119 Greg Hirshman 6-0, 6-1 before Tu dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to No. 52 Bradley Klahn. The Cardinal sealed the victory at No. 6, as Karill Karchmit of the Dons fell 6-2, 6-1 to Jeff Zeller. Jacob Hartwig, Nachbauer and Hart each fell, as well, as their respective spots.

The Dons will kick off the 2009 West Coast Conference Championship Friday in San Diego. Seedings and pairings for the tournament will be announced Thursday.

USF Seniors Shine In 5-2 Victory

Men's tennis downs UC Santa Cruz in final home match

(San Francisco,CA) - In its final home match of the season, the USF men's tennis team secured a 5-2 victory over UC Santa Cruz at the Cal Club in San Francisco. The match was the final home contest for three seniors - Mitch Del Rosario, Torin Ching and Tommy Tu - all who helped earn the victory for the Dons.

Del Rosario and Ching earned their first career victory at the top spot in doubles action as the senior duo defeated Jared Kamel and Marc Vartabedian 8-6. San Francisco earned the doubles point as Tu combined with Jacob Hartwig at No. 3, posting a strong 8-2 victory over Max Ortiz and Colin Mark-Griffin.

In singles action, Tu, who is currently ranked 103rd nationally, continued his strong spring with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 straight-set win over Max Liberty-Point at No. 1. Rainer Nachbauer, Einar Hart and Hartwig helped the Green and Gold's cause, earning their spots to put the Dons over the top. Nachbauer posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2, while Hart downed Max Ortiz 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Hartwig wrapped out USF scoring thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5.

The Dons will wrap up the regular season Wednesday as they travel to nationally-ranked Stanford. Following the match with the Cardinal, USF will head to the West Coast Conference Championships in San Diego to close out the spring.

Men's Tennis set to host UC Santa Cruz Saturday at the Cal Club

(San Francisco,CA) - Saturday the USF men's tennis team will host UC Santa Cruz in the Dons final home match of the 2009 spring season. The match will mark Senior Day as San Francisco honors three seniors - Tommy Tu, Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching. The Banana Slugs are currently eighth in Division III.

Tu leaves the USF program as one of the most noteworthy Dons in history. To date, the native of Vietnam has amassed a career record of 72-42 overall, 54-31 during the spring season. Tu has posted winning singles records in all four years of his career, including a 10-5 mark this season. Earlier this season, Tu entered the ITA Division I men's tennis singles rankings. With the ranking, Tu became the second Don from Northern California to earn a singles ranking in the past 10 years. With the two selections, San Francisco becomes the only school in the Northern California region to have two region natives earn national rankings in the past ten years. In addition, with the ranking, Tu is now just the second junior, and native, of Northern California to earn a national rank in the last five years. Tu is currenty ranked 103rd.

Del Rosario enter his final home match with a 31-42 career overall record, including a 22-28 mark during dual match play. Last season, as a junior, the Fremont, Calif. native posted a 13-7 record, including going a perfect 4-0 when playing No. 5 singles.

Ching is a three-year letterwinner for the Green and Gold with a 9-15 overall record, and a 2-1 spring record. This season Ching has teamed, primarily with Del Rosario in doubles play, playing mostly at the No. 2 position.

The Dons enter Saturday's match with a 6-10 overall record. First serve will be at the Cal Club at 1 p.m.

USF defeats rival Santa Clara 6-1

(San Francisco,CA) - San Francisco men's tennis earned its second straight victory over a West Coast Conference opponent Wednesday as the Dons dropped Santa Clara 6-1 at the Olympic Club. The Dons improve to 4-2 against league foes and 6-10 overall.

USF grabbed five of six singles points, including taking the No. 1, 5 and 6 positions in straight sets. No. 103 Tommy Tu continued his strong senior campaign, taking down Jay Wong 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. At the No. 5 spot, Jacob Hartwig earned a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Charlie Burke, while at No. 6 Michael Carreno downed John Iwanski 6-2, 6-1. Rainer Nachbauer earned a point for the Dons at No. 2, coming back from an early deficit to defeat Kyle Dandan 0-6, 6-3, 6-1. Mitch Del Rosario rounded out singles victories for the Green and Gold with a 6-3. 0-6, 7-6 (3) victory at No. 4 over Tommy Hicks.

Men's Tennis to play Broncos Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Olympic Club

(San Francisco,CA) - Wednesday the USF Men's Tennis team will host rival Santa Clara at the Olympic Club at 1 p.m. The match is a make-up match for a meeting between the Dons and Broncos that had been previously scheduled for February 11, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather.

San Francisco enters Wednesday's contest looking to improve on a 5-10 overall mark, including going 3-2 against West Coast Conference foes. In their last outing, the Dons snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-3 victory over WCC opponent Loyola Marymount.

Tommy Tu continues to pace the Dons' singles efforts, boasting a 103rd national ranking and a 10-5 dual match record. The senior is also a perfect 5-0 against conference opponents. In his last 10 matches, Tu has posted an impressive 9-1 mark.

In doubles action, the duos of Asaf Cohen and Tu, as well as Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer continue to be a threat for the Green and Gold. Cohen and Tu lead the way with an 8-2 mark, all at the No. 1 spot, including an unscathed 4-0 mark in league action. Hart and Nachbauer have compiled a 7-3 mark and have won their past two.

Following the match with Santa Clara, the Dons will host one final home contest Saturday, April 11 against UCSC at 1 p.m. at the Cal Club. The match will also mark Senior Day, as the Dons honor three seniors - Tu, Cohen and Torin Ching.

USF improves to 3-2 vs. WCC foes

(San Francisco,CA) - Thanks to a No. 3 singles victory by Rainer Nachbauer, the USF men's tennis team clinched its first 4-3 win of the season Saturday. With the victory over visiting Loyola Marymount, the Dons improve to 3-2 against West Coast Conference foes, 5-10 overall, for the season.

USF jumped out to an early, crucial, lead in doubles action, taking two of three from the Lions. At the top spot, Tommy Tu and Asaf Cohen continued their strong spring with a 8-1 victory, while Nachbauer and Einar Hart joined forces at No. 3, winning 8-2, to earn the point for San Francisco.

In singles play, Nachbauer's come-from-behind, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory at No. 3 clinched the match for the Dons. USF also earned wins at No. 1 and No. 6 in singles action. Tu, the 103rd nationally ranked player in NCAA Division I, garnered a straight-set 6-2, 6-3 victory at the top spot, while Mitch Del Rosario posted a straight -set 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6. In all the other singles spots, the Dons dropped in three sets.

San Francisco will return to the courts April 8 as it hosts rival Santa Clara. The match with the Broncos was previously scheduled for early February but was postponed due to weather. USF and SCU will now face off on the 8th at the Olympic Club at 1 p.m.

Men's Tennis looks to improve on 2-2 record vs. WCC teams

(San Francisco,CA) - The USF men's tennis team returns to San Francisco this weekend, as the Dons host West Coast Conference foe Loyola Marymount. The Dons and Lions will meet Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cal Club.

USF is looking to improve on its 4-10 overall record, including a 2-2 mark against league opponents. San Francisco's two WCC wins came against then-No. 55 Saint Mary's, 6-1, February 18 and a 6-1 decision over Gonzaga February 27.

Senior Tommy Tu, who is ranked No. 103 nationally in the most updated singles rankings, leads the Dons with a 9-5 overall record, including a perfect 4-0 mark when playing against West Coast Conference teams. Tu has also won eight of the last 10 matches and posted a 5-1 record in the month of March to pace the Dons.

In doubles action, Tu and doubles partner Asaf Cohen lead the USF campaign, with a 7-2 mark, all coming at the top spot. Against WCC foes, the duo is 3-0. Prior to losing the last two doubles contests, Tu and Cohen were a perfect 7-0 to start the spring season.

(Eugene, Ore.) San Francisco men's tennis dropped a closely battled match to Oregon, 4-3, Saturday in Eugene, Ore. After singles play, the match was tied 3-3, but the Dons were unable to secure the doubles point, falling to the Ducks.

In singles play, No. 122 Tommy Tu continued his strong senior campaign, garnering a straight set 6-3, 6-1 win at the top spot. Asaf Cohen and Einar Hart joined Tu in earning singles points. Cohen earned a victory at No. 3 after falling behind early but rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. At No. 4, Hart dropped the first set 6-7, but fought back to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 and earn the point.

(Pebble Beach, Calif) - The USF men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches this weekend in Pebble Beach, as the Dons hosted West Coast Conference foe Saint Mary's and No. 46 California. San Francisco fell 4-3 in a rain delayed match to the Gaels before falling 6-1 to the Bears Sunday.

Against the Gaels, the Dons (4-9) took three singles matches to earn their three points. Tommy Tu, the No. 122 singles player in the country, earned his seventh consecutive singles victory with a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1. Rainer Nachbauer and Einar Hart each also posted victories in singles play at No. 3 and 4, respectively. The deciding factor against SMC came in doubles play, where the Gaels took the No. 2 and 3 spots to secure the 4-3 win over the Dons.

Sunday afternoon against the nationally-ranked Bears, USF gained its lone point at the No. 2 singles position, as Asaf Cohen earned a 7-5, 3-2 (ret., inj.) win.

The Dons will return to the courts March 28, as they travel to Eugene to face Oregon.

(San Francisco,CA) - USF men's tennis will host a pair of matches at Pebble Beach this weekend as it hosts West Coast Conference rival Saint Mary's and nationally-ranked No. 46 California. Saturday, the Dons (4-7) will face the Gaels at 1 p.m. before matching up with the Bears Sunday at 1 p.m.

San Francisco heads into the weekend fresh off of a 7-0 victory over Northern Colorado in which the Dons won all the singles contests in straight sets. USF was paced by Tommy Tu, who is ranked as the 122nd singles player in the nation, who won his sixth straight singles match.

In doubles play, the Dons are led by Tu and Asaf Cohen. The duo has an unscratched 6-0 record this spring as USF's top doubles team. Also anchoring USF's doubles efforts are Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer, who are 5-1 in doubles action, including going 3-0 when playing at the No. 1 or 2 spot.

Following the matches this weekend, San Francisco will hit the road for its only away competition in a series of eight matches, as it travels to Eugene to face Oregon on March 28.

(San Francisco,CA) - USF swept a men's tennis decision, 7-0, over Northern Colorado Tuesday at the Cal Club in San Francisco. With the victory the Dons improve to 4-7 on the season.

"Everyone posted victories today," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "The match was a good momentum builder for our Pebble Beach event this weekend against Saint Mary's and California."

The Dons jumped out to a quick lead against the Bear, taking all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer joined forces to up-end Calix Van Lier and Adam Perez 8-6. The No. 2 spots and No. 3 spots came slightly easier and Mitch Del Rosario and Mike Carreno earned an 8-1 decision at No. 2 and Peder Steen and Torin Ching secured the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 3.

The momentum continued in singles play, as San Francisco won all six matches in straight sets. Nachbauer, at No. 3, and Del Rosario, at No. 6, each rolled through their matches winning 6-0, 6-0. Asaf Cohen secured a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2, while, nationally ranked, No. 122 Tommy Tu won his seventh straight singles match with a 6-4, 7-5 No. 1 decision. (San Francisco) - Tommy Tu won his sixth consecutive singles match Thursday, but the USF men's tennis team fell short, falling 4-3 to Alabama-Birmingham at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

UAB jumped out to an early advantage, taking two of three doubles matches from the Dons (3-7 overall). San Francisco's lone doubles victory came at the No. 1 spot, where Tu and Asaf Cohen posted an 8-6 victory for the duo's sixth straight doubles win.

USF rallied back in singles action, taking victories at the No. 1, 5 and 6 spots. Tu, who is ranked 95th nationally, earned his sixth consecutive victory at No. 1 thanks to a 6-4, 6-3 straight set win over Slawek Szeremeta. Playing No. 5, Rainer Nachbauer swept Tommy Petrich 7-5, 6-2, while Einar Hart earned a 7-5, 3-6, 10-6 victory over Tyrone Ewels at the No. 6 position.

The Dons (3-6 overall) head into the match fresh off of a trip to Hawaii, where they dropped a 5-4 decision to Division II powerhouse Hawaii-Pacific. There was also a match against Hawaii-Manoa scheduled, but it was cancelled due to rain. The loss against HPU snapped a three-match win streak for San Francisco.

Senior Tommy Tu headlines the USF efforts this weekend, as the No. 1 singles player has won his last five singles matches and, when joining forces with Asaf Cohen, their last five doubles contests. Tu is currently ranked 95th nationally, marking the second Don from Northern California to earn a singles ranking in the past 10 years. The other lone USF Northern California representative to earn a national ranking is former San Francisco standout and current USF assistant coach, Pablo Pires de Almeida. With the two selections, San Francisco becomes the only school in the Northern California region to have two region natives earn national rankings in the past ten years.

Dons fall to Hawaii Pacific

(Honolulu, Hawaii) - The USF men's tennis traveled to Hawaii last weekend to play a pair of matches. The Dons dropped the opening contest to Hawaii-Pacific 5-4, before the second match against Hawaii was called due to rain.

Against HPU, USF took an early advantage, taking the doubles point. At the No. 1 sport, Tommy Tu and Asaf Cohen earned an 8-2 victory, while Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer battled for a 9-8 (4) win at No. 2.

In singles play, HPU rallied back taking four spots but USF's Tu and Cohen grabbed singles victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Tu fought for a straight set 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory at the top spot, but Cohen fell behind early, but was victorious 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 at the second slot.

"It was a tough day of sloppy tennis against an opponent that fought hard all the way through," commented head coach Peter Bartlett. "We have to give the Hawaii Pacific team a lot of credit. At 1 and 2 doubles we played well when it counted and came through with victories. In singles it was the same with 1 and 2 coming out with good wins over good players. Unfortunately sloppy play from the rest of the line up made it impossible to get another point on the day. We lost the match using division 2 rules 5-4."

San Francisco takes the courts again Thursday as it hosts UAB at the Olympic Club at 1 p.m.

(San Francisco,CA) - Tommy Tu, of the USF Men's Tennis team, gained strong recognition Tuesday as the senior entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I men's tennis singles rankings. Tu is currently nationally ranked for the first time in his USF career and is listed as 95th out of the 125 athletes ranked.

The ranking is a milestone for San Francisco, as Tu becomes the second Don from Northern California to earn a singles ranking in the past 10 years. The other lone USF Northern California representative to earn a national ranking is former San Francisco standout and current USF assistant coach, Pablo Pires de Almeida. (San Francisco) USF men's tennis captured its third straight victory Friday afternoon as the Dons earned a 6-1 victory over Gonzaga at the Cal Club. With the victory, San Francisco improves to 3-5 for the spring.

San Francisco got off to a strong start, sweeping the doubles point before continuing the momentum into singles play. The Dons won five of six singles matches in straight sets, while dropping No. 4 in three. Tommy Tu earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1, while Asaf Cohen earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 Rainer Nachbauer captured USF a point at No. 3 with a 6-4 6-3 victory and Einar Hart was victorious at No. 4, 6-0 6-0. Rounding out victories for the Dons was a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6 for Jacob Hartwig.

USF will now hit the road, traveling to Hawai'i next weekend for a pair of matches.

The teams played singles first where the Dons picked up five wins to clinch the overall victory. The Aggies then won the doubles point by posting two wins.USF improves to 2-5 on the season and next faces WCC Opponent Loyola Marymount.

Singles began with a victory by USF at No. 1 as Senior Tommy Tu defeated Michael Reiser, 6-4, 6-3. The next four matches also went to the Dons. The lone Aggie singles victory came from Nick Lopez, who defeated Asaf Cohen at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles, Michael Reiser teamed with Nic Amaroli to win at No. 1 over USF's Mitch del Rosario and Torin Ching, 8-4. The clinching match came at No. 3 where Josh Albert and Tyler Lee defeated USF's Peder Steen and Alex Kotlyar, 8-5.

The Dons next two upcoming opponents will be Loyola Marymount Sunday February 21st at the Cal Club and Gonzaga University Friday February 27th at the Olympic Club. Both matches are scheduled for a 1 o'clock showdown.

(Moraga, Calif.) - After a slow start to the season, the USF men's tennis team captured its first victory of the spring Wednesday - a 6-1 victory over host Saint Mary's in Moraga. With the victory San Francisco improves t o 1-5 overall and 1-1 against West Coast Conference foes.

The Dons got off to a fast start, taking two-of-three from the Gaels. Tommy Tu and Asaf Cohen captured an 8-1 victory at the top spot, while Einar Hart and Rainer Nachbauer posted an 8-2 win at No. 3.

In singles play, San Francisco continued to roll, falling only at the No. 5 position. Jacob Hartwig earned a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6 to highlight the singles action. Tu at No. 1, Cohen at No. 2, Karill Karchmit at No. 3 and Nachbauer at No. 4 all earned victories in their respective matches.

San Francisco will hit the courts again Saturday, Feb. 21 when they host UC Davis at the Cal Club.

What is one of your biggest fears?

"I would have to say that one of my biggest fears would be not making a name for myself which I feel correlates with not becoming anything, not being known, not having a purpose, not impacting anyone, and not making anything with this life that I have been blessed with."

If you didn't play tennis, what's one other sport you would like to play?

"If I had the experience of tennis and no longer played tennis I would either play baseball or golf because I would expect to have a natural swing/stroke. If I never played tennis at all I would like to play basketball."

What are some of your hobbies?

"I like to play guitar, write songs/poetry/raps, listen to music, hang out with my girlfriend and friends, and play Xbox360."

What's your favorite way to celebrate after winning a match?

"My favorite way of celebrating after winning is ordering Chinese food with my teammates then enjoying the best sleep of my life."

What is your favorite type of movie to watch?

"My favorite type of movie to watch is a movie with lots of laughs. The plot does not need to be that great; the movie just has to have really memorable punch lines that will have people laughing when reenacted. On the other hand, I really like dramas that are twisted and outrageous with good characters. "

Who are some of your favorite musicians?

"I listen to all types of music ranging from alternative rock and hardcore rock to op and oldies. Some of my favorite musicians and bands would range from Third Eye Blind, The Bled, Brand New, Murs, The Spill Canvas, Atmosphere, Kings of Leon, Chromeo, Michael Jackson, Ne-yo, Martin Danielle, Otis Redding, and Antonio Carlos Jobim."

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

"I used to be in a number of bands before College. I was in a three piece pop punk band called Narkeolepsi in Jr. High as lead singer and guitarist. Then I was in a rock, alternative band in High School called Printed Blanks as lead vocals and rhythm guitar but later I was just lead vocals. Then towards the end of high school was in a hardcore scream band called My Heart Collapse as lead singer."

What is your favorite sports moment so far?

"My favorite sports moment so far would have to be this whole moment playing college tennis. Being on this team has been a true blessing in my life. I have made some of the best friends I will ever have, traveled around the U.S. sharing moments with them, and have made myself a part of USF history."

At what age did you start playing tennis?

"I started playing tennis at the age of 4. I have an older brother and an older sister who were already playing tennis. I was born into a tennis family. They use to pick on me on the tennis court hitting the ball as hard as they can straight at me. But being challenged by them has made me the player I am today."

Who is one person that inspires you?

"One person who inspires me would be my mom. My mom is a very kind, very caring, very giving, hardworking person. She inspires me to be just like her."

Dons, Gaels to face off Wednesday at 3 p.m.

(San Francisco, Calif.) - Looking for its first victory of the season, the USF men's tennis team will take the short trip to Moraga Wednesday afternoon to face Saint Mary's. First serve between the Dons and Gaels is scheduled for 3 p.m.

USF heads into the contest looking to secure its first victory of the season. After dropping the opening match of the spring season to Portland, the Dons have dropped four consecutive matches, three of which were against ranked opponents. Most recently, USF fell to No. 45 Arizona 7-0 in Tucson.

Saint Mary's enters Wednesday's match with a 1-7 record. The Gaels' lone victory came against Sonoma State on Jan. 28. In its last outing, SMC fell 4-0 at Arizona.

Following the match with the Gaels, the Dons will host three consecutive home matches. The homestand will open Feb. 21 against UC Davis and continue the next day with Loyola Marymount, with both matches being played at the Cal Club. USF will then host Gonzaga Feb. 27 at the Olympic Cub before heading to Hawaii for a pair of contests.

Tommy Tu and Asaf Cohen of the USF men's tennis team earned a doubles victory Saturday, but the Dons were unable to up-end the No. 40 Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, falling 7-0. With the loss, USF is still in search of its first victory of the season with a 0-6 record.

Cohen and Tu earned the lone USF victory of the day at the No. 1 Doubles spot, downing Ravid Hazi and Francois Vandermerwe 8-7 (7-5). Arizona earned the doubles point after taking 8-4 victories at No. 2 and 3.

In singles play, Einar Hart forced three sets, but was unable to capture the victory at No. 5. Hart fell to Jason Zafiros 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Tu and Mitch Del Rosario also each posted hard fought battles at the No. 1 and 6 spots, respectively, but were unable to capture a point for the Dons.

USF will hit the courts again Wednesday, Feb. 18, as they travel to Moraga to face WCC foe Saint Mary's. This season, San Francisco is 0-5 overall (WCC 0-1) against conference foes. The Dons have played every match this season on the road against a nationally ranked opponent except for the season opponer losing to University of Portland 4-3 in Seattle.

San Francisco was ranked as high as 67th nationally this season, before falling out of the polls this week. The Dons are in search of their first victory after dropping decisions to Portland, then-No. 34 Washington, nationally-ranked opponents UNLV and Nebraska. Orginally there was a match scheduled against Santa Clara for Wednesday, but due to inclement weather, the contest was postponed until April.

The Wildcats head into the weekend with three-match win streak on the line and are looking to improve to 5-0 when playing at home.

Following the contest with Arizona, USF will return to the Bay Area to take on Saint Mary's, Wednesday, Feb. 18 in Moraga.

(Las Vegas, Nev.) - Einar Hart earned a victory Saturday as the No 67 USF men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 73 Nebraska on the campus of UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. Friday, the Dons (0-4 overall, 0-1 vs. WCC foes) competed against UNLV, falling 7-0.

Hart earned the lone point of the weekend Saturday at the No. 5 singles spot. Hart earned a point with a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nebraska's Francois Van Impe. Asaf Cohen battled close for San Francisco at No. 3 against the Cornhuskers, but was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling 6-1, 6-7 (3), 11-9 to Christopher Aumueiier.

Friday, the Dons were unable to secure their first victory over the dual season, falling to the Rebels in Las Vegas. Against UNLV, Jacob Hartwig and Tommy Tu were the lone USF players not to fall in straight-sets. Hartwig, playing No. 6 singles, jumped out to an early lead over Bryan Miller, but was unable to continue the momentum, falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-2. Tu, representing the Dons at No. 1, took the first set against Elliot Wronski before dropping the point 4-6, 6-3, 10-5.

San Francisco will return to courts February 11 as they open the home slate of the 2009 spring season as they host rival Santa Clara. The match will be played in the City at the Olympic Club. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.

(San Francisco) - USF's Nationally Ranked Men's Tennis Team returns to action this weekend as they travel to Las Vegas for a pair of matches. The No. 67 Dons (0-2 overall, 0-1 vs. West Coast Conference foes) will face off with host UNLV and No. 73 Nebraska.

San Francisco is looking for its first win of the season, after dropping matches to Portland and No. 36 Washington Jan. 17 and 18, respectively, in Seattle. In the spring opener, USF battled until the end against the Pilots, falling 4-3. Tommy Tu, Asaf Cohen, Mitch Del Rosario earned points for the Dons in the contest. The next day, San Francisco was unable to rebound against the Huskies, falling 7-0.

The Dons will face a tough challenge again this weekend. USF opens play Saturday at 10 a.m. against UNLV. The Rebels are led by Luca Barlocchi, who is ranked fifth in the Mountain region.

Sunday, San Francisco will match-up with No. 73 Nebraska on a neutral court in Las Vegas. The Cornhuskers are paced by David Bendheim, the sixth ranked player in the Central region.

Following this weekend's action, the Dons will host their first home match of the season. On Feb. 11, USF will host rival Santa Clara at the Olympic Club at 1 p.m.

The No. 67 USF men's tennis team opened the 2009 spring season this weekend, dropping two matches. Saturday, the Dons fell just short in a hard fought battle with West Coast Conference foe Portland 4-3. Against the Pilots, Portland earned an early advantage taking the doubles point. San Francisco earned its three points with victories at the No. 1, 3 and 6 singles positions. At No. 1, regionally ranked Tommy Tu fell behind early to Filip Zivkovic but rallied to the 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory. Asaf Cohen earned a point playing No. 3 thanks to a three-set 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over the Pilots' Geoff Hernandez. The Dons' final point game at No. 6, as Mitch Del Rosario posted a 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 decision over Nick Wales. In the match, five of the six singles matches were decided by three sets, with the exception of No. 5.

(San Francisco) - This weekend marks the opening of the 2009 spring season for the No. 67 USF men's tennis team as they travel to Seattle to face West Coast Conference foe Portland and No. 34 Washington. The Dons will face off with the Pilots Saturday before matching-up with the Huskies Sunday. Both matches will be played at Noon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.

The Dons head into the spring campaign ranked No. 67 in the National ITA rankings, marking the first time in the modern era (post-1973) that USF has opened a season nationally ranked.

The San Francisco roster is headlined by Tommy Tu. The senior enters this weekend ranked 21st in the West Region, becoming just the fourth player in program history to receive a regional rank in the past 29 years. A year ago, playing No. 1 singles, Tu played registered a 13-9 record in the dual season and a 15-9 doubles record. For his career, he has amassed a 43-26 record.

The Dons return three All-WCC selections from last season. Tu highlights the trio after earned second-team accolades for his second consecutive season, while Asaf Cohen and Rainer Nachbauer, as well as Tu, earned second-team doubles honors.

A year ago, San Francisco finished the dual season with a 15-8 record to finish fourth in the WCC.

(San Francisco, Calif.) The USF men's tennis team and senior Tommy Tu have earned rankings in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional and national rankings that were released Tuesday.

"We are pleased to get some form of credibility from the ranking committees," said 12th year head coach Peter Bartlett. "But our main focus will be preparing our athletes for the start of the season and continue as in the past to try and achieve the credibility with our results on the court. Our main focus and goal aside for WCC play will be attempting to make the NCAA's. Our schedule this season will be one of the toughest ever with competitions against five of the seven Pac-10 teams."

The Dons are ranked 67th nationally as a team, marking the first time in the modern era (post-1973) that USF has opened a season nationally ranked. San Francisco is one of four West Coast Conference teams ranked in the top-75. Joining USF is Saint Mary's, San Diego and Pepperdine.

Tu enters the 2009 spring season ranked 21st in the West Region. Tu, who played No. 1 singles for the Dons a year ago, becomes the just the fourth USF player to receive a regional rank in 29 years.

San Francisco, Calif- The University of San Francisco Men’s Tennis team announced the signing of Mark De Castro and William Schumacher for the fall of 2009.

“I am ecstatic to bring in two highly sought after recruits to help keep building on our program,” said Head Coach Peter Bartlett.

Mark De Castro (Union City, California) is currently ranked top 25 in the USTA Norcal Boy’s 18 and is Nationally 194 overall. He is a 4 star recruit on TennisRecruiting.net. and is currently a senior at Moreau Catholic High School in Union City, California.

On paper it said in the WCC Semifinal Championship round Pepperdine 4 San Francisco 0 but many who were there or even particpated in the dual match realized what a huge step this was for the program against a National Championship contender. Many did not see in the paper Thong Tu going to a 3rd set against the #5 player(NCAA Singles semifinalist) in the country with a (DNF) or Asaf Cohen serving for the first set up 30-0 or even Senior Falko Huettenberger serving for the match at the #5 slot(DNF) not to mention Rainer Nachbauer going to a third set(DNF)as the match was called. It was an old fashioned shootout and after the dust settled Pepperdine showed why they are the Champions as they would go on to win their 18th straight WCC title the next day and go on to the NCAA Round of 16 losing to eventual NCAA Champions Georgia Bulldogs. The Dons look to build upon their 2007-2008 success as the young upstart team will be back having seen where the bar is held.

San Francisco - USF Men's Tennis took a 5-2 victory over the University of Buffalo in their first match of the spring season. The Dons swept doubles competition and took four of six in singles competition at the San Francisco Tennis Club Saturday afternoon.

Doubles team one of Thong Tu and Einar Hart earned an 8-6 victory over Buffalo's number one team of Nikesh Panthlia and Kirill Kolomyts. Greg Hom and Rainer Nachbauer earned an 8-2 defeat over Alexis Lluis and Marcelo Mazzetto. Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching also pulled the 8-2 win over Eric Rothstein and Octavian Stane.

In singles action, Tommy Tu(USF) defeated Kolomyts 6-2, 6-2 at #1; Hart(USF)#4 defeated Stane 5-7, 6-1, 6-4; Del Rosario(USF)#5 defeated Rothstein 6-1, 3-6, 6-2; and Ching(USF) #6 defeated Lluis 6-3, 6-2. Cohen(USF) #2 fell to Buffalo's Panthlia 7-5, 6-2; and Nachbauer(USF)#3 fell to Mazzetto 6-4, 6-3.

USF Men's Tennis Closes Out Fall Season With Top Performances

The Dons Compete Well At The Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, CALIF. - San Francisco men's tennis performed well at the Pacific Invitational held last weekend taking home top honors in doubles, having two individuals play at the semifinal round or higher and having a player win the consolation title.

The Dons' pairings of Asaf Cohen and Rainer Nachbauer, and Torin Ching and Mitch Del Rosario both went undefeated in Round Robin play. Cohen and Nachbauer were 3-0 in Flight B winning contests versus Nevada's Alex Daruty and Cameron Spearman, 8-2, Saint Mary's Achim Christner and Andrea Zannoni, 9-7, and UC Davis' Henry Landes and Kevin Liang, 8-5. In Flight C, Ching and Del Rosario had a 2-0 record beating Nevada's Benjamin David and Augustin Myard, 8-6, and Saint Mary's Youssef El Bouzkouri and Jerry Ellison, 8-5.

USF's Einar Hart and Tu Thong, who battled in Flight A, also went home proud with a 2-1 record. The duo topped Pacific's Artem Gramma and Vegerd Verskimagi, 8-6, and Nevada's Laurent Garcin and Guerin Smith, 9-8.

Dons' senior Falko Huettenberger went 2-1 and took second in Flight B Singles. On route to runner-up honors, Huettenberger defeated Nevada's Smith and Pacific's David Gonzalez. Saint Mary's Andrea Zannoni bested Huettenberger, winning two sets to one in the finals, 1-6; 7-5; 6-2. Cohen made his way to the Flight A Semifinals before losing, 6-3; 6-3, to Nevada's Garcin. Cohen was 1-1 for the tournament.

USF's Nachbauer won the Flight A Singles consolation title with a 2-1 record. Following an opening loss to Saint Mary's Marek Dvorak, 6-4; 6-7(4); 2-6, Nachbauer defeated Pacific's Gramma , 6-2; 6-0, and Justin Garcia of Nevada, 6-7; 6-3, 10-5.

Hart placed second in the Flight B Singles consolation bracket losing, 6-2; 6-0, to Shaun Garcia of UC Davis.

The tournament was the final fall competition for USF. The Dons will next be in action on March 13, 2008 when they host Penn.

Mike Munson from Phoenix,AZ was one of Peter Bartlett's top recruits during the 1998 season. Mike was captain for the team and played singles and doubles for the team. Mike graduated from USF with a degree in finance in 2002.

What are you doing with your life today?
- After I graduated in 2002, I worked in San Francisco for Deloitte until 2004. I moved back home to Arizona, and have been working in finance since then. Currently, I am working for Cole Capital (www.colecapital.com) as a financial reporting analyst. The company is absolutely world class, from the products we sell to the people I work with. Definitely watch for this company to be the leading brand in real estate in the next few years.

I started swimming in the summer of 2001 at USF, and have been hooked ever since. So, I am still swimming and started doing half and full marathons when I moved back home.

I've sorta started to play tennis again. I recently joined a USTA team. Two weeks ago I played my first real match in 5 years. I got waxed. I was hurting in places I never knew I had places for 5 days. Thank God for Advil. I was taking it like candy after that match.

Why did you choose USF?
- As you and Coach will recall, all I wanted to do was hit tennis balls. It was the same during high school. I thought that if I got in with a good college coach, and got a lot of playing time that I might be able to play on the professional circuit after college. USF's team at the time really lined up well with those two requirements. When I came on in 1998, the tennis team was in a rebuilding phase. Coach was/is a world class technician and coach. When I came to the school and met Peter that pretty much sealed the deal.

What were your fondest and most memorable moments playing for USF?
- Well Bulldog(Sean's nickname on the team), there are a couple here. During 2001, my junior year, I had been banged up all season. I was playing the best tennis of my life in Winter of 2000, but I got sick on a trip to Ventura, CA and never got back into that groove. The team goes down to Pepperdine for the WCC Conference(April 2001), and the morning before matches start Coach and I go to Ralph's to get Gatorade and such for the matches. So there we are getting Gatorade, and he tells me that this might be his last season as head coach. It was a shocking moment. I don't know if this was a master stroke by Coach but it really lit a fire under my ass.

Sean: Yeah, I remember you telling me about that before the WCC Conference matches started. I gave it all I had during that Conference tourney winning my match against Pepperdine and Gonzaga. That definitely affected my play during the match against Gonzaga. Here I am coming in during the 2000-2001 year seeing that USF finished 8th for like the past 10 years or what not and here we have a chance to finish 7th for the first time in years. I was playing #6 against Shaun Whitney from Gonzaga and just playing a terrible match. I lost the first set but from what you had said earlier I just kept hanging in there. I was aware the dual match score was 2-2 and I just found a way to win the next 2 sets. It was pure will in that match. I just couldn't let us down and so I fight and claw and win to put us up 3-2 and I go over to your court to see you winning one of the biggest matches for the program (I wonder what would have happened if we had finished 8th again) I run onto your court as if we had won the NCAA Championships when in reality we had just finished 7th in the WCC. That was just a start of something special for the USF Dons Tennis program that many people don't know or simply overlook. I mean here we came from 1/1/2 scholarships playing teams like Pepperdine and SCU who had doubled up on us but in my mind I wanted whoever we played to respect us. That year we never lost 7-0 in any dual match which sounds ludacris now but believe me it meant alot for us back then. Now USF has 4 1/2 scholarships and sometimes the current generation just doesn't know how good they have it. There is no reason the teams now can't finish Top 3 in the WCC on a consistent basis.

MM: Yeah. Peter had spent a lot of time and energy with me developing my game. I couldn't imagine ending the season without really putting everything out there. That day I had a good match against Ryan Redondo--who was #5 for Pepperdine--and ended up beating Joel Wilke of Gonzaga to clinch our #7 spot in the WCC in 2001. After the match everyone rushed the court and Dusty Hall picked me up and carried me around. It was a defining moment in my life.

What did the experience playing under Coach Bartlett teach you about yourself and life?
Coach taught me so much. For me he's my own personal John Wooden. If I had to wrap everything together that he imparted to me, it would be this: Being a great tennis player, or a great anything, isn't an excuse not to be a decent human being. When Coach steps onto the court as a player or a coach, he is always giving everything he has but he never demeans his opponent or the opposing team. All the guys we played against, he always walked up after the match and shook their hand after the match. He was just so classy and dignified about how he treated people. So, that's one thing I have really made a point to do in my life.

Also, when I was playing I always noticed how relentless Coach was at perfecting his craft, and adding to his body of knowledge. During Conference, he would always watch how every other team would warm-up, drill, cool-down, etc. That's something that I am constantly trying to apply to what I do professionally, always looking at what other people do well, and then taking that to apply to what I am doing.

Tennis wise, there were a lot of things that Coach told me over my tenure as a player that took some time to figure out. When we were working on my serve he said, "Mike, you need to find the yoga asana within the serve." I had no idea what he meant at the time. After a few weeks of practice, I figured out that he wanted me to find my own dispassionate rhythm to the serve, something I could call up irregardless of the situation. I still think about that when I go to serve. Then there was another thing he said: "Mike, get down like a big cat." I still have no clue what this means.

Are there any things you wish you could have done better?
- Looking back on the whole thing I really wish I could have won more matches. Other than that, no regrets.

What memorable moments do you have with your teammates that made our team special?
- Well Sean, I still have really great memories of warming up with you before every match we played during 2001. That was cool. There were some others that still make me laugh.

Joel Wilke of Gonzaga had Christian Dyvik's number. Wilke just neutralized Christian's atomic ground strokes. After Christian had lost for the second time in a row he was fiercely angry. He was just walking back and forth on the court like a caged panther. I walked by and heard him say, "He is soooo laz-ay. He is lay-see-er than a hip-hop-a-tay-moose." I laughed so hard I almost soiled myself.

When I was a freshman, our number one player on the team was Asaf Shafir. Asaf was born in Israel, spent some time in high school in New Jersey, so he was still sort of figuring out America. We went to Stockton to play University of the Pacific. It was extremely overcast that day, and we drove through a heavy industrial zone to get to the University.

Asaf says: "This is like ahhhh ahhhh some industrial type of ghetto."
"In my country, Asaf," I began, "We have a word for a place like this. We call it The South." We both lost it. It was hilarious.

What do you hope for future USF Dons tennis teams and the tradition you helped start?
- I hope that the guys on the team really stick together. When I was a freshman, all the guys on the team would go to dinner on Friday night at Little Joe's. So, I hope they do something like that, or have some new traditions that really bring them together like that. Also, a few weeks after my last match as a Don, Peter called me up and took me out for a beer at the Plough and Stars--the greatest Irish bar in the Richmond. He said it was a tradition. I hope he is still doing this. Back then people could smoke in bars, and there was an Irish folk band playing. We each had a pint of Guinness and just hung out. It was a great moment.

What are your thoughts on Coach Bartlett and his coaching philosophy? Did you feel he helped you on the court and off?
- I'd say that Coach's philosophy is very simple: Always put yourself in a situation to win. Even though it's a simple statement, there's a lot of planning, and training that goes into executing that philosophy. I really didn't understand this that well when I was playing for him, but now that I have been removed from competitive tennis for a few years now, I have a much better grasp of what he meant. The beauty of this philosophy is that it applies to anything you do.

I've always been a big quote guy. When I was a freshman, Peter pulled me aside and said, "Mike Munson," you know how he starts sentences with his players name, "Practice consistently. You don't need to kill yourself each day, but make sure you get in touch with the ball each day." This applies to anything you are working on. If you really want to achieve a high level of success, you need to "get in touch" with your craft every day. Practice, practice, practice, but understand the balance. He would also say, "Listen to the body." So he basically set the stage for understanding how to train and push myself professionally.

What advice would you give to the next generation of players as they leave the world of college tennis for the working world?
- Well, after you graduate you will kinda have to rebuild your life. After I graduated I cut back on playing tennis, and started swimming competitively, and I worked a lot. So I was doing things, but it was much different than college where there's always something going on, good guys from the team to hang out with, etc. So, I'd just say be ready for things to be different than college, and go out and do different things.

When most guys on the team think about Mike Munson, other than your work ethic, the first things that people probably remember is your laugh and your monstrous appetite. You haven't lost those have you?
- The laugh is still the same. It's genetic. I'll have that until the day I die. As far as the appetite, I've had to taper that back. After I graduated and started working, I'd still eat enormous portions of food. Ask Coach. He seriously encouraged me to think about being a competitive eater or "food fighter." Well, it caught up to me pretty fast. I ballooned up to one-hundred and ninety pounds plus. It was a wake-up call. So since then, I've had to eat smaller portions more frequently.

Sean: Yeah I hope your are staying in decent shape. Man could you eat. Then again we were like professional athletes working our everyday. I remember we went to In and Out and you use to plow through those burgers like they were going out of style.

Following a 6-2, 6-4, loss to Cal's Andy Chirita in the round of 32, Ching topped Orion Ashmore and Tony Bulich of Nevada, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 7-6 (5) respectively. In the consolation semifinals Ching defeated UC San Diego's Chad Becker, 6-4, 6-4 to qualify for the finals. Facing his third Nevada opponent, Kristian Kuharsky, Ching took a one set lead winning 6-4 to open the consolation championship match. Kuharsky, however, proved fatal as he went on to win the next two sets, 6-0 and 1-0 (10-6).

Teaming with Rainer Nahbauer, Ching also won two doubles' matches and finished in the semifinal round, where him and his partner were beat by Washington's Ryo Sekiguchi and Skyler Tateishi, 8-6.

Del Rosario Advances To Consolation Quarterfinals At ITA Regionals

Seattle, Wash. - San Francisco's Mitch Del Rosario defeated Gabe Kanzelmeyer of Nevada (7-6, 6-1) to advance the consolation quarterfinals Sunday at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships.

After losing a three-set match to Kevin Kaiser of Stanford (3-6, 6-3, 2-6), Del Rosario toppedd Saint Mary's Matt Welty by scored of 6-3, 6-2 to set up yesterday's victory over Kanzelmeyer. Results on Monday's quarterfinals match will be posted as soon as available.

In the winner's bracket, USF's Thong Tu and Asaf Cohen made it to the round of 32 before being knocked out of the competition. Tu took Sacramento State's Tim Lantin, 6-2, 7-6 and Cohen won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 over Cal's Geoff Chizever to advance. Two Washington players were the end point for the duo as Tobi Obenaus topped Tu, 6-2, 6-1, and Andy Kuharszky defeated Cohen, 6-2, 6-0.

The doubles pairing of Cohen and Del Rosario won 8-6 over Washington's Bator and Tateishi to advance to the round of 16 where Stanford's Kelly and Muller disposed of them, 8-1.

Former University of San Francisco Don Alum Pablo Pires De Almeida c/o 05 served as a hitting partner for tennis Legend Pete Sampras last month at The Hennessy Funds Alumni Legends Cup on September 8 and 9 at the Tiburon Peninsula Club in Tiburon, Calif. The tournament also consisted of an event that had top players from Stanford, Cal, USC and UCLA. The PAC-10 schools were comprised of players that span the past four decades. Players were grouped in age groups of 20's, 30's, 35's, 40's and 50's. The Cup also offered an exhibition match featuring former world number one legend Pete Sampras taking on San Francisco native and rising tennis star Sam Querrey. That match will be held on September 9th.

Sampras gets testy in Tiburon exhibition match

There may be some premature baldness developing on the top of his head and the timing in his tennis game is off right now, but make no mistake that Pete Sampras, at age 36, still loves to win more than the next guy.
Chair umpire Larry McMullen ought to know.

Although Sampras was playing a fun and relaxed exhibition match Sunday during the Alumni Legends Cup in Tiburon, the retired 14-time Grand Slam singles champion became annoyed when, in the seventh game of the first set, his opponent - talented 19-year-old Sam Querrey - hit a backhand down the line that a linesman ruled in. Sampras thought the shot was closer to Mill Valley than in and asked McMullen to overrule.

He didn't.

"Are you embarrassed? You should be embarrassed,"

"I don't get pissed off much, but that pissed me off," Sampras snapped at McMullen.

So there you have it. Sampras came to Tiburon to get tested and he got testy instead.

"No respect out there," Sampras joked later.

He's not kidding.

While Sampras' next opponent, Roger Federer, took the stage at Arthur Ashe Court in the U.S. Open dressed in black Sunday in front of a packed house and national television audience, Sampras appeared in a white shirt and white Dusty Baker-sized wristbands on the stadium court at the Tiburon Peninsula Club in front of a crowd that was closer to 1,000 than the 2,000 the facility holds.
That's a shame. The Oakland Raiders, arguably the worst team in professional football, manage to attract a sellout crowd on Sundays while Sampras, arguably the greatest tennis player ever, couldn't fill the place in a tennis-mad area.

Well, they missed quite an exhibition. After that controversial call, Sampras fought off nine set points to win that game. He eventually lost the first set 6-4, but he won the next set 7-6 by winning the tiebreaker 7-2. But, in the decisive 10-point match tiebreaker, the 6-foot-6 Querrey prevailed 10-6.

"That's fun for me because there's no greater challenge for me to go out and play someone who's half my age," Sampras said. "He's (ranked) 48th in the world he's just going to get better and better. To play at that level is a big challenge for me to keep up."

In all fairness, Querrey has beaten several players in the top 25 this year (James Blake, Tommy Haas, Mikhail Youzny and Juan Monaco) and Sampras hasn't been playing or practicing regularly since he retired from competitive tennis in 2005. He's been busy golfing while raising two boys with his wife, actress Bridgette Wilson. He's not in his best tennis shape.

"I'm like an old beat-up truck," Sampras quipped.

If so, the exterior may be a tad rusty and the tires may have less tread, but the motor still has some get up and go. Sampras' serve has some sting left and his forehand still has some zip. After his exhibition singles match, he teamed with TPC pro Brandon Coupe, who recently was named assistant coach at Stanford, in a doubles match against Querrey and 24-year-old Pablo Pires de Almeida of Fairfax. Sampras and Coupe won 12-10, 10-3 in a pair of tiebreakers.

OK, so Sampras wasn't exactly Wimbledon-ready. He grunted to get to some balls and he popped up one service return that landed beyond the grandstand in a clump of trees. Consider it his mulligan for the day.

"I kind of surprise myself every now and again," Sampras said. "At the same time, I see myself missing (shots) a little more, like today. It's like I'm old now."

Old enough, albeit, to take on the undisputed king of the court, the 26-year-old Federer, the man who is two Grand Slam titles from tying Sampras' record. They will play a series of three exhibition matches five days apart, beginning on Nov. 20 in Seoul, South Korea. They're talking about doing some exhibitions in the U.S, too, after they earn what Sampras said was some "Christmas money" playing each other in Asia.

"I don't know what to expect," Sampras said. "I think initially the first couple of games I'll be like a caged lion, trying to hold my own a little bit. But I practiced with him (at Sampras' house in L.A. for two days earlier this year) and I held my own É I hope to be competitive. I don't want to embarrass myself. I want to go out and play well."

Evidently, Sampras played well enough against his opponent Sunday that Querry is ready to bet his Christmas bonus that Federer will have his hands full.

"I'd be surprised if Pete didn't take him out," said Querrey, who was living in Santa Rosa when Sampras beat Boris Becker in 1995 to win Wimbledon then beat Andre Agassi in the U.S. Open finals the same year.

That, of course, assumes that Sampras is going to start training hard and playing more than two or three times a week against some college kids.

"Mentally I'm fine," Sampras said. "Physically I'm actually OK, but tennis-wise I'm just not as sharp."

That's the main reason Sampras came to play in Tiburon, where the first Alumni Legends Cup was won by Stanford, which defeated UCLA 6-1 in the finals. Competing against Querrey in a competitive environment was a test for Sampras to gauge where he stands for the "true test" when he plays Federer.

How did Sampras grade himself Sunday?

"Seven and half," he said on a scale of 1-to-10. "If you balanced it out, the linesmen were about a two."

As the 2007-2008 USF Dons season kicks underway yours truly has had a great opportunity to coach former All-American star from UC Cal Berkeley and 2004 graduate Raquel Kops-Jones of Fresno, CA at the US OPEN in Flushing Meadows, NY. Arriving here on Sunday August 19th, Raquel and I put in some good practices as she prepared for the women’s qualifying event. Lots of sparring with other WTA tour players and myself really had Raquel in good form.

Raquel currently 170 WTA needed to win three rounds in the qualifying draw to make the big stage. Rain delays and bad timing prevented her from going on first on at 11a.m. on Tuesday the 21st as we waited from 9 in the morning all the way till 6p.m. before they canceled play. Since she was scheduled to play early on Tuesday they made her play last on Wednesday. Raquel toughed out a 3 set match against a girl from Slovenia and was even cramping in the third but survived. At last round one completed as we leave flushing at 10:30p.m. to catch the bus. A sense of relief but joy from me is what has transpired as I look ahead to her 2nd round match.

Thursday comes around and she is 4th up on court 11. We wait for the Hugo Armando match to end and as soon as he does, we find out she has been switched to court 13. Raquel comes out firing and wins the first set against the 23 seed from China and jumps out to an early 5-1 lead in the second. Coast looks clear and I am already thinking wow she’s going to be in the last round of qualies!!! Well 5-2 goes by then 5-3 as I get a little tense inside and pretty soon it is 5-4 and I am thinking uh oh. Raquel gathers her composure and calmly serves out the match!!! What a sense of joy to see she is in the last round of qualies at the US OPEN. I am happy but realize she has some things she needs to work on and so I say to her right after the match lets go back on the practice court for 15 minutes as it near 10p.m. EST. We work on a few areas for those 15 minutes and go to the locker rooms and get ready for Thursdays battle as we leave Flushing late at night again.

Raquel is 4th on court 7 on Thursday and we anxiously wait the conclusion of the Scoville Jenkins match in the gym as we do some movement drills to get her going. The gym is packed with everyone doing the little extra it takes. I look over and Robby Ginepri is working on his core stability with the medicine ball with his trainer. Other WTA players are working on their flexibility, and a bunch of others are on the treadmills. Quickly the Scoville Jenkins match is over as his opponenet retires and just like that is it showtime. As she steps on to court 7 for the last round of qualies to battle against a girl from the Ukraine there is a good size crowd cheering her on as she is one of the few Americans left. Raquel again jumps out to a 3-1 lead and is playing well only to squander and lose the first set 7-6. Opportunity gone. Second set up comes around and she is up 3-1 and her opponent is about to have a mental breakdown. Raquel unfortunately plays a sloppy game and just like that it is 3-2 with it being back on serve. A pivotal 6th game goes back and fourth with the umpire making a terrible call on the far side against Raquel which would have given her a break point and turn the momentum right around. She indeed wins the next point which could have made it 4-2 but the girl is hanging tough and holds. I can feel the momentum slipping and just like that it goes break, hold, break and Raquel loses 6-3. The dream is over for the 2007 US OPEN. The hard work of the week has paid off but the opportunity to play in the big stage is gone. It was a tough feeling but sometimes you learn more from the losses than you do from the wins. It kind of reminded me of our chance this past April against USD in the 1st round of the WCC Championships and how we did not take what was ours. You only have so many opportunities to show what you are made of and the good players and teams always rise to the occasion and never let the moment pass them by. Hopefully all of these experiences will make her and our USF Dons team mentally tougher in the future. Go Dons!!!

Former USF Don picks up first professional win

Pablo Pires de Almeida, who played tennis at Drake High and USF, earned his first professional doubles victory in an ATP-sanctioned tournament Monday. He won his first-round match with partner Adam Davidson at the $75,000 Comerica Challenger, a USTA event in Aptos (Santa Cruz County).

The unseeded team of Pires de Almeida and Davidson, formerly of Azusa Pacific University, knocked off the No. 3 seeded team of Kristian Pless of Denmark and Kamil Capkovic of Slovakia, 6-1, 4-6, 10-7. Pless has been a pro since 1999 and entered the Aptos tournament ranked No. 80 in singles.

During the past two years, Pires de Almeida had been 0-4 in main-draw, ATP-level doubles matches before Monday, according to the ATP Web site. He won a singles match in October 2006 at a Futures tournament in Mexico, but lost in the second round.

The Comerica Challenger is hardcourt tournament at Seascape Sports Club and considered one of the starting points to the summer hardcourt season that culminates at the U.S. Open. The doubles champions split $4,650; Pires de Almeida guaranteed at least $465 with Monday's victory, giving him is first professional payday.

USF Tennis Legend Harry Likas To Be Inducted Wednesday Into Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame

USF tennis star Harry Likas, who won the 1948 NCAA singles championship and is a member of the University's Athletic Hall of Fame will be inducted into the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame on Wednesday, May 23rd.

The induction will take place during the NCAA Championships at the University of Georgia in Athens.

"Harry Likas is a class act," said current USF men's tennis coach Peter Bartlett. "He put USF tennis on the map and helped build the program that won the national championship in 1949. We are proud to have him in the Hall."

"I am very honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame," said Likas. "It is great for people to know that USF had a top, top program and remember what we accomplished. Winning the singles championship in 1948 was fantastic and this is the icing on the cake."

Likas was honored at the USF "Night of Champions Dinner" and was written up in the commemorative book, "Legends of the Hilltop."

His biography from that publication:

Prior to winning the 1948 NCAA Singles Championship, Harry Likas had established a successful track record in singles competition, especially on the West Coast. He had won the California State Junior, Pacific Coast Junior and the Western Junior titles. He also had advanced to the quarter-finals in the first post war match of the U.S. Open in Forest Hills in October 1946. Later that year, he was one of sixteen top tennis players in the U.S. invited to participate in the Sugar Bowl Invitational.

As the Dons opened their 1947 spring season, Likas was ranked number 15 in the U.S. He had already defeated many of the top players and was considered "an outstanding young player who will go far."

Seeded number one for USF, Likas handily defeated players from Santa Clara, St. Mary's, University of the Pacific and San Francisco State in both singles and doubles. At season-end, the Don netters boasted an outstanding record, sweeping all Bay Area competition en route to winning the Northern California Collegiate crown.

In his last year for the Dons, Likas-with one exception-won every match he played, including the Northern California Invitational where his deadly backhand defeated Don teammate Conway Catton (6-1, 6-4). Likas and Harry Roche teamed to win their doubles match as the Dons won the team title and were presented with the William Johnson Memorial Trophy.

The following month, Likas bested Catton to win the Ojai Invitational. The headline in the Foghorn read, "Likas Rammycackles All Comers in Ojai Invitational." Likas then went on to capture the 1948 NCAA Singles Championship. Seeded number five, he awed the three top players, finally upsetting top seed Victor Seixas of North Carolina in a hard fought 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 match to take the title.

Harry Likas continued on the tennis circuit outpacing five Wimbledon Champions in sectional play before joining the corporate world in 1949.

He attended Lowell High School before coming to the Hilltop.

USF senior Matthew Berry, who recorded a 27-7 singles mark at number one singles this season, has been named first team all-West Coast Conference.

Berry, a senior from South Africa, came on strong at the end of the season, winning his last 10 singles matches and 16 of his last 18 decisions, all at number one singles. On the year his dual match record was 21-4 and he won all three matches in the WCC Championships.

"Matt had a special year," said Dons head coach Peter Bartlett. "It is great to have a senior leader at number one who consistently earns you a point match in and match out. He is well respected throughout the league and truly deserved this honor."

Sophomore Thong Tu, a sophomore from Alameda was named second team all-West Coast Conference and Asaf Cohen, a freshman from Tel Aviv, Israel was named honorable mention.

Tu had a strong season, recording a 22-11 record, 16-8 in dual matches. He was 6-1 at the number two slot and 10-6 at the third position.

The University of San Francisco Men's team defeated 4th seeded University of Portland this afternoon on the beautiful campus of USD. The Dons knew exactly what was at stake and came to play. The key to the match was Freshman Rainer Nachbauer(Bregenz, Austria) and Sophomore Torin Ching(Honolulu, Hawaii) doubles play at the #2 spot to clinch the doubles point against the Pilots winning in a 9-8(4)slugfest. University of Portland is best known for their strong doubles play and with the Dons able to clinch the doubles point, it just made everything that much easier as it popped the Pilots spirit going into singles play. Senior Matthew Berry(Capetown,South Africa)as he has been doing all year continued his winning form in his last ever collegiate match. Rainer Nachbauer playing #4 clinched his match to give the Dons a convincing 3-0 lead. After Falko Huettenberger lost in a tough three setter Tommy Tu who had been sick all conference tournament fittingly clinched the dual match for the Dons giving the 6th seeded Dons the right to the 5th place spot in the WCC tournament. The Dons who have learned alot as a team will go down on paper as the 5th best team in the WCC Conference tournament for 2007 but deep down inside they could easily have finished Top 3 again but unfortunately did not get the job done against USD on the first day.Opportunities come and go and hopefully this team and future teams will realize just how important every match in the West Coast Conference Tournament is. USF concludes season with win over fourth seed

The USF men's tennis team concluded a successful trip to the WCC Championships with a 4-1 win over fourth seed Portland Sunday at the University of San Diego. The Dons finished fifth in the event and concluded their season with a 13-13 mark.

The Dons broke ahead early, taking the doubles point as Torin Ching and Rainer Nachbauer won in a tiebreaker at two and Asaf Cohen and Mitch Del Rosario won 8-5 at the three slot.

Matthew Berry continued his red shot play winning 6-3, 6-1 at number one his 17th victory in the last 19 contests over Filip Zivkovic 6-3, 6-1. Rainier Nachbauer defeated Colby Jager 6-3, 6-1 at four and after Falko Huettenberger dropped a tough three set decision to Alex Strom, the Dons clinched fifth place with Thong Tu's three set (7-6, 2-6, 6-3) victory over Joel Kinkaid.

Getting to know Sophomore Torin Ching

Sophomore Torin Ching is currently a political science major and comes from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Why did you choose USF and what other universities were you considering?

I chose USF for it’s close location to Hawaii and academic reputation along with a great opportunity to play NCAA Division 1 Tennis. I also was considering University of Pacific, Loyola Marymount, and University of Hawaii. I don’t regret my decision as my experience has been rewarding.

How did you get started in tennis?

At 7 years old my father took me out to Kaneohe public park and that is where it all began. I admired Michael Chang when I was younger and watched many of his spectacular matches. That gave me motivation to want to excel in the game of tennis.

What are your plans for summer of 2007?

Academically, I plan to keep focused on my academics by taking summer school classes back home at the University of Hawaii. I plan to play the ITA Summer Circuit in Southern California with teammate Mitch Del Rosario( Fremont,CA) as well as Open tournaments with Assistant Coach Billy Ball. I look to keep working on my conditioning and prepare for the Fall of 2007.

What are your thoughts about the 5th/6th WCC Conference Match tomorrow against University of Portland?

University of Portland is a solid team in singles and doubles. In March we lost a heartbreaking 5-2 decision to them in the Boise State Invitational. We all knew as a team we were capable of winning but we did not play up to our potential. Because of all the hard work throughout the season such as our 6a.m. Morning Madness(7 miles at Ocean Beach) runs along with countless hours spent in the weight room and on the tennis court we are prepared and realize that it has all come down to this last match of our season. After the bitter taste of losing to them in March, we look to recover and finish strong especially for our lone graduating senior Matthew Berry(Capetown, South Africa).

What is the biggest difference you have noticed in the level of play in your transition from Hawaii to here at University of San Francisco?

In college tennis the guys have more weaponry such as bigger serves and ground strokes. There are longer rallies with more shots having depth. Players are more relentless and never willing to give up. Teams support is a big advantage and there is a lot more camaraderie within the team.

What do you fellow teammates call you?

My teammates call me T.K., Cha-Ching, Hawaii, Mama- Ching, Kim Kui, Massive Calves, and Torn.

Why do they call you Mama-Ching and Massive Calves?

Teammate Tommy Tu started to call me Mama-Ching at a team dinner because I always clean up after everyone and as team captain make sure they are following instructions. Matthew Berry decided to call me massive calves after he figured out I have the biggest calves team (which is not true). Actually freshman Einar Hart has the biggest calves on our squad.

As a player for the University of San Francisco what would you like to best be remembered by?

I would like to be remembered by my teammates as the person who has the best work ethic on the court in the weight room, and is a person who is the first person to be at practice and always the last one to leave. I know with hard work, the rest will take care of itself. Go Dons!!!

A testament to the character of the University of San Francisco Dons showed this afternoon as they were able to defeat Loyola Marymount 4-2 in the consolation semifinal round and regroup after a heartbreaking loss to USD earlier this morning. The Dons played the match on the courts of San Diego State University and were able to show the heart and guts of what this team is truly made of. The Dons down 1-0 after losing the doubles point got on the board when Matthew Berry(Capetown,South Africa)defeated his opponent in straights. Next up for the Dons was Rainer Nachbauer giving the Dons a 2-1 lead. Mitch Del Rosario(Fremont,CA) playing at the #6 spot stepped it up and won in three sets. Lastly, Asaf Cohen (Tel Aviv,Israel) clinched the match for the Dons with a 6-2,7-6 victory giving the Dons a 4-2 victory. The Dons will play University of Portland Sunday Morning at 9a.m. for the right to claim 5th place in the West Coast Conference tournament.

It's like a Dream.. You Wake up and It's Gone

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team had a golden opportunity this morning against the University of San Diego Toreros in 1st round play of the WCC Conference tounament. Unfortunately it was not to be as the moment of opportunity slipped right through their hands. The lack of experience and the sense of urgency played true to part as matches were finished off and the Dons dreams of reaching the semifinal round were done in 5 minutes. Falko Huettenberger (Stuttgart, Germany) was unable to hold at 5-6 deuce in the second set which gave the Toreros a 2-1 lead. Asaf Cohen(Tel Aviv,Israel) down 3-5 Ad out could not break as his opponenet closed it out to give the Toreros a 3-1 lead. That left our two freshman Einar Hart(Bodo,Norway) and Rainer Nachbauer(Bregenz,Austria) still on court. Rainer was able to break and serve out the second set when Einar Hart could not break down 5-3 and before we knew it, it was over. The Dons will pick it up at 1:30p.m. at the SDSU courts against Loyola Marymount University. The Dons will rebound and still have a great shot to finish Top 5 in the tournament. Go Dons!!!

Day 1 of the West Coast Conference Championships

The #6 seed University of San Francisco Dons Men's Tennis Team came to play today against the University of San Diego Toreros in day 1 action of the West Coast Conference Tournament. The match was held at the famous Barnes Tennis Center. Conditions were a little bit tough with winds and slight drizzle occuring during the matches. The Dons were able to get on the board as Matthew Berry as he has been doing all year stepped it up again beating Thomas Liversage. Jonas Mouly however evened it up for the Toreros defeating Tommy Tu in straight sets. The Dons are still hanging tough even though losing the first sets in matches #2,4,5,6. The Dons are battling and will continue play tomorrow morning at 9a.m. at the main courts at USD. Check back for more updates. Go Dons!!!

USF Handles Pacific on Senior Day

As the rain and clouds cleared away, the USF Men's Tennis team was able to host the University of Pacific at the beautiful Olympic Club this Saturday afternoon with some great support as the Dons took care of business and now look forward to the WCC Championships. It was Senior Matthew Berry's(Capetown,South Africa) last home match for the Dons and as he has been doing all season he stepped it up at #1 with a win. Great support for the team was shown all around as former players and alumni along with the support of Athletic Director Debbie Gore-Mann were present. A great barbeque and beautiful weather made it another illustrious day for the Green and Gold. As the journey of the 2006-2007 season comes closer to an end, it is important that we must keep the momentum and support of USF Men's Tennis along with Women's Tennis for the future of USF Tennis remains brighter than ever. Dons defeat Pacific 6-0 on Senior Day at The Olympic Club
USF heads to WCC Championships in San Diego Friday

USF men's tennis celebrated Senior Day by sweeping past visiting Pacific 6-0 in a rain delayed match Saturday at the Olympic Club. It was the final tuneup for USF before opening play in the WCC Championships next Friday in San Diego.

The match was delayed until 3:15 due to a morning rain, but after the senior ceremonies for Matthew Berry, it did not take the Dons long to get started.

The match began with singles, and USF got straight set wins by Berry, Falko Huettenberger, Rainier Nachbauer, Asaf Cohen and Greg Hom. USF also got a win at number two by Thong Tu that was decided in a 10-point tiebreaker.

For Berry, the only Dons' senior, the win at number one was his 14th in the last 16 contests.

The doubles competition was not played.

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team proved why they will be a force to reckon with come Conference time April 20-22nd down in San Diego,CA as they willed themselves to a victory when the chips were down and out Monday afternoon at the Olympic Club. The Dons coming off a stinging defeat from last Saturday rebounded with a clutch doubles point and Matthew Berry, Tommy Tu, and Asaf Cohen stepping it up to clinch the dual match victory. The three showed tremendous heart as all matches were nailbiters and only a few points seperated each outcome. Cohen and Tu both down one set each dug deep with Cohen winning 6-3 in the third and Tu clinching the dual match with a 6-4 in the third victory.The Dons last match will be Saturday the 14th at 1p.m. against U.O.P. with a barbeque for all spectators. Come out and support as we celebrate the Lone Senior Matthew Berry in his final home match. Go Dons!!!

Tu and Cohen Rally with three set wins; Berry wins again

The USF Dons got come from behind three set wins by Thong Tu and Asaf Cohen and a straight set win by Matthew Berry at number one in defeating Saint Mary's 4-3 in men's tennis Monday at the Olympic Club.

The match started with USF winning the doubles point with wins by the teams of Falko Huettenberger and Berry winning 8-6 and the combo of Tu and Mitch Del Rosario taking a 9-8 win.

At singles, USF again got a solid performance by Matthew Berry in a 7-6, 6-4 win over Joel Kusnierz. It was Berry's 24th win in 30 decisions this season.

The key to the victory was the three set, come from behind wins by Asaf Cohen and Thong Tu. Cohen lost the first set to Yury Platanov before taking a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win while Tu rallied from a first set loss to defeat Achim Christner 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

USF hosts Pacific Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Olympic Club on senior day when Matthew Berry will be honored.

In doubles play, the teams split the first two matches with Falko Huettenberger and Asaf Cohen winning 8-2 at number three. USF lost the number one doubles, and Torin Ching and Rainer Nachbauer lost 9-8 (9) at the third slot. This would eventually determine the match winner.

Matthew Berry won for the 23rd time in 29 matches with a 7-6, 6-3 decision over Xavier Barajas-Smith. Asaf Cohen took straight sets at number four and Rainer Nachbauer won at number five, winning in the third.

But USF failed to win the fourth point as the host Hornets took the two, three and six singles, finally clinching when Gabriel Loredo defeated Huettenberger at three singles.

USF hosts Saint Mary's Monday at the Olympic Club.
