University of San Francisco Men's Tennis earn #60 National Ranking







Dons ranked #60 in the nation following strong outing in Utah

March 2, 2010


(San Francisco,CA) - The University of San Francisco's Men's Tennis team earned a national rank of No. 60 in the ITA Collegiate rankings released Tuesday. USF is currently 6-2, 2-0 against West Coast Conference foes.

"It is nice to be nationally recognized in the national rankings," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "We know, though, that we will still have a lot of work ahead of us. We still are striving towards the goal of, as team, reaching the NCAA's. We will continue to work on our goals throughout the season."

San Francisco will return to action Thursday at 11:30 a.m. as it hosts Xavier at the California Tennis Club.

USF Takes Down Weber State



March 1, 2010

(Logan, Utah) - San Francisco men's tennis wrapped up their three-match road trip through Utah with a 4-3 victory over Weber State Sunday. Thai Tu continued his current win streak, earning his sixth consecutive singles match.

With the win, the Dons improved to 6-4 for the spring season.

"Weber State came out firing against us today and we had our backs against the wall," commented head coach Peter Bartlett. "Our guys fought through the conditions and won some huge tiebreakers at key positions to keep us alive".

Weber State took an early lead with the doubles point. The lone USF doubles victory came courtesy of Mark DeCastro and Einar Hart at No. 3, as they defeated Paterson and Rode, 9-7.

The Dons came storming back in singles action. Weber State nearly grabbed the victory taking an early 3-0 lead, but USF fought its way back. Ola Bakke started the campaign with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Cole Paterson. Tu then secured his sixth straight victory at No. 1 with a 5-7, 7-6 (9), 6-2 win against Unger. At No. 2, Hart earned a 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 win over Hipp. William Schumacher secured the victory for San Francisco at No. 5 thanks to a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 win over Hmtz.

USF won a close battle today against Weber State 4-3 by winning 4 singles matches. Weber State took the lead by winning the doubles point and went up on almost all the singles matches before the Dons fought their way back and won at 4, 1, 3 and 5.

USF will return to the courts Thursday at 1 as they host Xavier at the Cal Club.

USF Takes Down No. 70 Utah

(Salt Lake City,UT) The University of San Francisco men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over host No. 40 Utah Saturday in Salt Lake City. Ola Bakke clinched the win for the Dons with his first clinching victory of his collegiate career.

With the win, USF improves to 5-4 on the season and earned their second victory this season over a nationally-ranked foe.

"We knew it was going to be a close 4-3 type match," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "Our guys have been working hard lately to get a legitimate win over a very good program, like Utah. We battled the conditions and competed really well today."

San Francisco got out to a fast start, earning the doubles point. The Dons took the No. 2 spot with an 8-6 victory by William Schumacher and Rainer Nachbauer. At No. 3, Einar Hart and Mark DeCastro led the Dons to the point with an 8-4 victory over Allin and Suriane.

In singles action, Thai Tu earned his fifth straight victory with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Phillip Eilers. Schumacher garnered a point for USF at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Stephen Jacobs before Bakke captured the match for San Francisco with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win against Alex Golding at No. 3.

USF will take the court again Sunday when they face Weber State at 10 a.m.

USF Men's Tennis Falters In Provo


Feb. 27, 2010

(Provo, Utah) - The USF men's tennis team opened a weekend swing through the state of Utah Friday afternoon with a 6-1 loss to No. 45 BYU in Provo. Thai Tu garnered the Dons' lone victory in singles action.

With the loss, San Francisco falls to 4-4 on the season.

BYU jumped out to an early lead in doubles play, taking all three doubles sets. The Dons came close at No. 2 and 3, but were unable to capture the point, falling 8-6 at both positions.

In singles action, Tu garnered USF's lone point of the afternoon thanks to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 98 Shubert. San Francisco fell in straight sets at the remaining five singles spots.

The Dons resume play Saturday as they face No. 70 Utah in Salt Lake City.

Dons travel to Utah to battle BYU, UTAH, and Weber State

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team travels to Utah to battle #45 BYU, #70 University of Utah, and Weber State. The Dons 4-3(WCC 2-0)look to carry the momentum of a 3 match win streak into the Beehive State.

Scouting BYU
Coached by former ATP Tour player Brad Pearce the Cougars are currently 9-1 coming off a loss to PAC-10 team University of Arizona and most recently a win defeating of South Alabama. BYU'S number one player is #98 Thomas Shubert from Honolulu, Hawaii. The Dons last played BYU during the 2006-2007 season. Senior Matt Berry and then freshman Asaf Cohen won in singles but unfortunately the Dons would lose 5-2. For a recall on the match log onto

Scouting UTAH
The UTAH Utes are currently 4-3 coached by F.D. Robbins in his 23rd year. The Utes are currently #67 in the nation. The Dons and Utes last faced on the roof of the SFTC February of 2008 as the Dons won in a hard fought battle 4-3 coming down to Senior Falko Huettenberger's thrilling 3rd set victory.

Scouting Weber State
The Weber State Wildcats are part of the Big Sky Conference and are coached by Jared Burnham in his fifth season. The Wildcats finished 2008-2009 with a 14-12 record and currently are coming off a 5-2 loss to University of Utah. The Wildcats are currently 3-5 during the 2009-2010 season.

Dons defeat UC Davis Aggies







(Davis, Calif.) - The University of San Francisco won four singles matches, offsetting the doubles point captured by UC Davis, as the Dons rallied for a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis, Calif.

The victory improves to Dons to 4-3, while the Aggies drop to 4-5

UC Davis secured the doubles point, winning two of three doubles matches. The lone USF victory came at No. 3, as Einar Hart and Mark DeCastro earned a 9-8 (7-4) victory over Tyler Lee and Nic Amaroli.

San Francisco rallied in singles action to earn the victory. USF started off with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 by DeCastro, before Thai Tu gave the Dons the advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nick Lopez. San Francisco went up 3-1 thanks to a No. 3, 6-0 6-4, victory by Ola Bakke, but UCD knotted the score 3-3, leaving the final match to be the determining contest. At No. 6, Jacob Hartwig defeated Connor Coates in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-4, to put the Dons on top and the victory.

USF will return to the court Friday at 1 p.m. when they face BYU in Provo.

Dons to play UC Davis

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team will play the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday February 20th at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Dons last faced the Aggies on February 18,2009 winning 5-2 at the California Tennis Club. Seniors Mitch Del Rosario and Tommy Tu came out on top in singles.

Scouting the Aggies

The Aggies will face the LMU Lions Friday December 19th. The Aggies are led by Toki Sherbakov and Connor Coates. The Aggies are currently 4-3 and currently are coming off of a 5-2 loss to University of Portland. The Aggies play in the Big West Conference.

San Francisco Dons Defeat St. Mary's 4-3

The University of San Francisco Dons defeated the St. Mary's Gaels 4-3 today at the Timothy Korth Complex to even their record to 3-3(WCC 2-0). The Dons were able to get on the right track sweeping the doubles and winning at 1,2,and 5. Freshman Mark DeCastro was able to clinch the match winning in three sets. Next up for the Dons are the UC Davis Aggies in Davis,CA Saturday February 20th at 1p.m.

University of San Francisco Tennis looks to battle WCC opponent St. Mary's

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team 2-3 (WCC 1-0) will play St. Mary's in Moraga at the Timothy Korth Complex on Wednesday at 3p.m. The Dons coming off a 4-2 win over #75 University of Pacific on Friday February 12th at the California Tennis Club will look to even their record. Following Wednesdays match the Dons will face UC Davis in Davis, California on Saturday February 20th at 1p.m.

Scouting the Opponent
The Dons last faced the Gaels in the West Coast Conference Tournament in San Diego,CA wining a 1st round decision 4-3. Sophomore Jacob Hartwig was able to come through to push the Dons into the Semifinals against the Waves. The Gaels are led by Junior Lucas Tirelli and Senior Andreas Zannoni. The Gaels are coming off of a 5-2 win over Eastern Washington in Eugene, Oregon.

University of San Francisco Men's Tennis defeats #75 UOP








(San Francisco,CA) - The University of San Francisco men's tennis team earned a 4-2 victory over visiting Pacific Friday at the Cal Club. The match contained only singles action due to threatening weather in The City.

With the victory, the Dons improved to 2-3 for the season.

"Our guys new that Pacific was going to be a tough match," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "They knew that they were going to have to work hard. With the rain and abnormal conditions, our guys really did a good job working hard from the get go.We acted as a team and used the California Tennis Club's facility as our own today with lots of great support and energy. In the end, we played with discipline and confidence." Next match is a conference showdown against Saint Mary's on Wednesday the 17th at Saint Mary's 3pm.

USF took victories at the No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 spots to garner the match victory. Thai Tu posted a straight-set 6-4, 6-0 victory over, nationally-ranked, No. 108 Artem Gramma, 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Mark DeCastro earned at No. 4 victory for San Francisco with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Vigard Veskimaji, while Ola Bakke earned at 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 against Karl Paaro. Jacob Hartwig rounded out USF victories at No. 6, thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 win against Chase Oliphant.

San Francisco will return to the courts Wednesday as it faces Saint Mary's in Moraga at 3 p.m.

Dons Drop Decision to #26 Fresno State


The University of San Francisco men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to nationally-ranked No. 26 Fresno State Sunday evening in Fresno, Calif.

With the loss, the Dons, who are ranked regionally, fell to 1-3 on the season.

Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen battled hard in the contest but were unable to secure a point for USF. Tu earned match points and Cohen won his first set, before the match was decided.

"Fresno State was another tough opponent," commented head coach Peter Bartlett. "The guys needed to take advantage of opportunities in order to turn that match around. Our guys are a little young and learned a lot from their experience today. We are taking confidence from this match and looking forward to another home match this Friday."

San Francisco will return to the courts Friday when it hosts Pacific at the Cal Club. First serve is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

Dons ready to battle #26 Fresno State

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will face #26 ranked Fresno State Sunday night at 5p.m. down in Fresno,CA. The Dons 1-2 (1-0 WCC) look to battle the Bulldogs at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.

Scouting the Opponent

The Fresno State Bulldogs recently lost 4-3 on February 3 to the #33 ranked California Golden Bears. The match came down to the wire with Cal's Jonathan Dahan winning the last match. Fresno will also compete in the ITA National Indoor Tournament in Charlotesville, VA after playing the Dons. The Bulldogs boast the No. 83 player in the country, David Ayoun, and two Top 40 doubles teams, No. 20 Mirko Zapletal and Taylor Leiby and No. 36 Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier.


What to Look For

The Dons will be playing the Bulldogs in a doubleheader after Fresno State battles Santa Clara in the morning. The Dons will be at full strength as Senior Rainer Nachbauer is back in action after missing the first two matches of the season. The Dons coming off a close 5-2 loss to #41 University of Hawaii look to carry the momentum on Sunday.

Dons Drop Decision to No. 41 Hawai'i

Freshman William Schumacher earned a singles victory Wednesday as the USF men's team dropped at 5-2 decision to No. 41 Hawai'i at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. The victory at the No. 6 position marked the second of the spring for Schumacher.

"Our guys proved today that they are ready to take down a nationally ranked team," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "We had many opportunities and the University of Hawaii team did a good job of hanging in there a little longer than us. We had the momentum early with the doubles point win from #2, #1 and let some opportunities go that hurt us in the end. Our guys showed that they are a top team today that is due for a big win."

USF (1-2) jumped out to an early lead in doubles play, taking the top two points. Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen defeated the Warriors' Dennis Lajola and Jeremy Tweedt, 9-7, at the top spot. The Dons' earned the doubles point thanks to the efforts of Mark DeCastro and Einar Hart, who downed Phillipp Eberhard and Andreas Weber 8-4 at No. 2. Schumacher and Rainer Nachbauer were unable to secure the sweep for USF, falling at No. 3 to Daniel Llarenas and Leo Rosenberg 8-3.

Schumacher was the lone Don to earn a singles point, thanks to a sweep of Llaernas at the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-1. Cohen and DeCastro each forced three sets in their respective matches. Cohen fell behind early to Tweedt but rebounded in the second set to force a third. The senior was unable to carry the momentum, though, falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. DeCastro earned the victory in the opening set but stumbled to fall to Eberhard 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.


San Francisco will return to the courts Sunday when it travels to Fresno State. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.

University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Falls to UC Irvine 4-3

Thai Tu, Ola Bakke and Mark DeCastro each earned singles victories Sunday as the USF men's tennis team dropped at 4-3 decision at UC Irvine.

With the loss, the Dons evened their record for the spring at 1-1.

Irvine jumped out with an early lead, earning the doubles point. The Dons won just one spot, as Tu and Asaf Cohen earned an 8-6 victory at No. 1 over Zac Tsai and Khunpol Issara.

The Dons earned three points in singles play, thanks to victories at No. 1, 3 and 5. Tu earned his second victory of the season with a three-set win (2-6, 7-5, 6-1) over Fabian Matthews. Bakke earned his second career victory for USF at No. 2, defeating Shimpei Suzuki. DeCastro won his second consecutive singles match at No. 5, downing Steven Henderson 6-1, 6-3.

San Francisco will return to the courts Wednesday as they host Hawai'I at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Dons defeat WCC Opponent LMU 6-1

The University of San Francisco Men's tennis opened the 2010 spring season Saturday with a 6-1 victory over Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. William Schumacher and Mark DeCastro earned their first career victories in the Dons' season opener.

USF jumped out to an early lead, earning the doubles point. Playing No. 2, Thai Tu and Asaf Cohen posted an 8-3 victory over Lopez and Sauer. At No. 1, De Castro and Jacob Hartwig downed Maggi and Malet 8-6. LMU earned the victory at No. 3 as Zaraca and Bazula earned an 8-6 win against USF's Schumacher and Ola Bakke.

In singles action, Tu, Bakke, Hart, DeCastro and Schumacher earned victories to give USF the win. Tu downed Sauer at No. 1 6-1, 6-2, while Bakke earned at victory at No. 3 over Malet, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Hart earned the victory at No. 4, defeating Bazula 7-6 and DeCastro secured a No. 5 win with a straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win against Maggi. Schumacher earned his victory at No. 6, downing Andreasian in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

USF to battle against WCC Opponent Loyola Marymount University

The University of San Francisco Men's Team rained out of it's first three matches will play Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine this weekend down in LA. The Dons are picked to finish 3rd in the West Coast Conference in 2010 and look to finish higher than their 3rd place finish of 2009. The Loyola Marymount Lions are projected to finish 5th on the Men's side. Match time will be at 12p.m. on Saturday January 30th at the LMU Tennis Center.

Scouting the opponent
The Loyola Marymount Men bring three seniors this year and two talented sophomores. The Lions are led by Ivan Lopez who is ranked #87 in the ITA rankings in singles and is ranked #60 with Otto Sauer in doubles. The Lions will look to seniors Borja Malet, Renzo Maggi, and Nick Von Der Ahe.

Last Meeting
The Dons last faced the Lions on April 4th, 2009 with the Dons Winning 4-3 thanks to Rainer Nachbauer's cliniching singles victory at the #3 singles position. The Dons would win the doubles point and Seniors Tommy Tu and Mitch Del Rosario both posted singles wins.

USF Sophomore Thai Tu Receives Regional Ranking




USF Sophomore Thai Tu (Alameda,CA) received a regional ranking of #20 for the start of the spring season. The vote was based on the the Northwest College Coaches and was administered by the ITA Committee. Tu and Senior Asaf Cohen (Tel Aviv,Israel)also received the #10 ranking in doubles for the Northwest section.

Dons picked to Finish 3rd in WCC Conference

The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis Team was picked to finish 3rd in the West Coast Conference preseason poll, as voted by the Head Coaches in the Conference.The Dons have finished 3rd in 2003, 2006,and in 2009. Pepperdine University was picked as the favorite to win this year's West Coast Conference title in the 2010 preseason poll. 2009 WCC Champion Pepperdine garnered seven first place votes for a total of 49 points in the men's poll. The Waves are currently ranked No. 17 in the ITA national rankings. San Diego, last year's second place finisher in the WCC, received the remaining first place vote and a total of 41 points to take second place in the preseason poll. San Francisco was picked third with 33 points, while Santa Clara came in fourth with one less point than the Dons. Loyola Marymount received 24 points, edging out Portland, who received 21 points from the coaches. Saint Mary's came in seventh with 16 points, and Gonzaga rounded out the poll with eight.

On the men's preseason all-conference team, San Diego's Dean Jackson and Pepperdine's Bassam Beidas topped the list, both of whom competed in last year's NCAA Tournament. Jackson became an All-American in singles after his run to the Round of 16, while Beidas Beidas appeared on the All-American list in doubles. Pepperdine's Alex Llompart, last year's WCC Freshman of the Year, also gained a spot on the preseason team along with All-WCC First Team member Filip Zivkovic from Portland. Loyola Marymount's No. 1 singles player Ivan Lopez was also a preseason all-conference selection joined by San Diego's Nikola Bubnic, who played an integral part in San Diego's second place finish at last year's WCC Championships.

Dons set to face Toreros




The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will face the USD Toreros Tuesday January 19th at the USD West Tennis Courts at 1:30p.m. The Dons unable to complete their first match against the Pepperdine Waves due to inclimate weather will look to battle the Toreros. With the forecast having a good chance of rain, singles play will most likely happen first. Go Dons!!!




Last Meeting
The Dons last faced the Toreros in the 3rd/4th place match in the West Coast Conference Tournament during the 2008 season losing a heart breaking match 4-3. The match came down to the #6 singles match with San Diego winning the 3rd set tiebreaker.

USF vs. Pepperdine delayed due to rain

The University of San Francisco Men's tennis team was battling against #17 Pepperdine University today at the Malibu Racquet Club when play was halted due to rain. The dual match will try and continue Monday if weather stays clear. The Dons will next battle the University of San Diego tuesday down in San Diego. Both coaches from USF and Pepperdine hope to reschedule the match, which was there Spring dual season opener for both Universities. Play will resume from the point it was stopped.

Dons get set to ride the Pepperdine Waves in Malibu




The University of San Francisco Men's Tennis team will face the Pepperdine Waves Saturday January 17th at 12p.m. at the Malibu Racquet Club to kickoff the 09-10 season. The Dons finished the 2008-2009 season last year 9-12 with a 3rd place finish in the West Coast Conference losing to #18 Pepperdine University 4-0 in the Conference Semifinals and defeating University of Portland 4-1 to finish 3rd. The Pepperdine Waves finished the 2008-2009 season 20-10 Winning the WCC Title and defeating Cal 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA's before losing to Stanford 4-0 in the 2nd rd of the NCAA Tournament in Palo Alto.

New Faces for the Dons
The Dons Bring in 5 new players to the squad this year led by sophomore Cal Transfer Thai Tu(Alameda,CA). Tu is the brother of former USF #1 Tommy Tu c/o'09. The Dons also add University of Arizona transfer Ola Bakke (Oslo,Norway)and three freshman Mark DeCastro (Union City,CA) Will Schumacher (New Orleans,LA) and Spring 2010 addition Richard Bucalem (San Paulo, Brazil). The Dons look improve on their 2009 Season.

Scouting the Opponent
The Pepperdine Waves will be led by #39 Bassam Beidas who claimed the 2009 Southern Intercollegiate tournament defeating USC's Daniel Nguyen. Returning players for the Waves will be Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) , Alejandro Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico), and Stuart Kepler (Dallas, TX).
