


Men's tennis opens the spring season in Seattle

(San Francisco) - This weekend marks the opening of the 2009 spring season for the No. 67 USF men's tennis team as they travel to Seattle to face West Coast Conference foe Portland and No. 34 Washington. The Dons will face off with the Pilots Saturday before matching-up with the Huskies Sunday. Both matches will be played at Noon at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.
The Dons head into the spring campaign ranked No. 67 in the National ITA rankings, marking the first time in the modern era (post-1973) that USF has opened a season nationally ranked.
The San Francisco roster is headlined by Tommy Tu. The senior enters this weekend ranked 21st in the West Region, becoming just the fourth player in program history to receive a regional rank in the past 29 years. A year ago, playing No. 1 singles, Tu played registered a 13-9 record in the dual season and a 15-9 doubles record. For his career, he has amassed a 43-26 record.
The Dons return three All-WCC selections from last season. Tu highlights the trio after earned second-team accolades for his second consecutive season, while Asaf Cohen and Rainer Nachbauer, as well as Tu, earned second-team doubles honors.
A year ago, San Francisco finished the dual season with a 15-8 record to finish fourth in the WCC.
